Installed a Comma 3x in a Gen 1 R1T, features are really intriguing but I'm finding the Longitudinal is sporadic in traffic (mild to moderate to heavy). It brakes way too hard like it's wants to keep the same distance between the lead car most of the time. Is there a way to adjust the allowable follow distance? The truck is constantly speeding up and breaking hard, there is no grace with allowing a car going to same speed to merge into the lane and have comma gently slow back to a standard follow distance. Maybe it's my imagination but I think the stock ACC was better in traffic, worse in everything else.

Currently I'm on Sunnypilot/staging on the cool kids model. Any idea here on how to tune this aspect? Other than that, the comma is a nice device with solid performance. Only other thing I would like to tune is adjust lane centering. Would like to adjust so that is more in the center, mine tends to hug the right side of the lane more often.

Any model suggestions or setting to get a bit more control?

I had to turn off long to fall back to the Rivian sensor because of this. Sunny and long is equivalent to the farthest follow distance Rivian uses., even under the aggressive setting. I've been pleased running Sunny since I made that change. You still get the feature of MADS and other Sunny benefits, just not the follow distance.

The right scroll wheel should adjust "driving personality" which affects follow distance, if you have OP Longitudinal active. I keep mine exclusively in Aggressive mode.

This definitely doesn't sound like OP Longitudinal to me. OP Long handles lane merges REALLY well.

Are you sure you are using OP Longitudinal and not using the Rivian's built-in cruise control?

That herky-jerkiness ("constantly speeding up and breaking hard") sounds more like the Rivian's cruise control to me. OP Longitudinal is much smoother with acceleration and braking in my experience. In fact, it doesn't accelerate fast ENOUGH for my liking.

Yeah when I scroll the right wheel it changes the driving personality when engaged and it's more jerky and brakes harder than I remember the stock Rivian ACC behaving. As a test this morning I took Longitudinal control off and used the stock AAC. While not perfect, it handled breaking and speeding up smoother and allowed people to merge into my lane without slamming onto the brakes.

Over the next few days I'm going to toggle between Longitudinal control back and forth to try to qualify the difference between the two.


So far, using ACC, the entire route I took today was actually usable where I didn't get frustrated and just go into MADS mode. This was heavy stop and go traffic and ACC didn't leave like 2 to 3 car lengths between me and the next car at low speeds and gradually applied brakes.

On my side, I've been extremely happy with the Comma AI + Longitudinal.

It's not perfect, but magical in terms of the % of time it can do all the driving. There are times where it slows down when I'm not quite sure why--not sure if it is lighting in what it is "seeing", or what. It's rare enough on my side where I'm willing to embrace it given all the positive capabability I'm getting.

Given the inherently "qualitative" way in which these system experiences are reported [what is perceived as great by one person, can be perceived as terrible by another], I'm in the camp who has had a "great experience" with the stock highway driver assist. My only real complaint is the amount of time the stock system disconnects because the road I'm on is not supported [I understand the side roards, but get frustrated when it's a highway that seems normal.]
