Greetings from CO. I just watched a YouTube video of a couple who damaged their AWD Sprinter while off-roading in rural OR and had to be towed 130 miles to the closest MB repair shop in Bend OR after a local repair shop told them they didn't have the ability to make the repair.

This got me to thinking about how this situation would be addressed when driving a Rivian. I know the Rivian website talks about roadside assistance and mobile repair in addition to the service centers, but I have to wonder how robust this infrastructure is.

Has anyone run into a situation in which their Rivian was disabled when far from a Service Center?

Has anyone attempted to have their disabled Rivian serviced by a non-Rivian shop just so they could continue on their journey?

Is anyone else concerned about this issue when they contemplate taking their Rivian on a road trip to remote areas?

I do have some concerns when taking my car to remote places...but I don't think that concern is any greater for the Rivian than for other cars.

The amount of koolaid drinking is pretty wild.

Look to out of warranty vehicles to see how rivian will treat you in time.

R1 doesn’t like the bumpers messed with since they’ve got sensors in each corner, speed and power limits aplenty. Add in the hydraulic lines that hang low and you’ll enjoy driving without that system functioning.

Rivian has mobile service.
Can the mobile service "Rescue" you if you get stranded while exploring/adventuring to the middle of nowhere? Say you broke a lower control arm or some other big issue.

What are the limits of mobile service?

they Equip their service vehicles with pro eagle floor jacks that are meant for rough ground and have previously touted using R1Ts for off-road service calls. What they’ll actually do is a question for rivian.

I had this very discussion with a mobile tech doing some minor repairs to my R1T shortly after purchase. Since Rivian is the only automotive manufacturer I know of who is so secretive about their vehicle they will not even tell you where the fuse box is located, let alone what fuses go to what functions, I asked what happens if I am out in the middle of nowhere and a critical fuse blows. He said you would need to call Rivian and have a tech come find you and replace the fuse. Is this really an efficient use of manpower and what is the likelihood of this happening speedily? LOL you will even have cell service to make the call. For future reference there are two fuse boxes, one under the dash on the passenger side and one similarly situated on the driver’s side. No need to search the Owner’s Manual, no mention of a fuse box there. It is going to be a cold day you know where before Rivian would rescue you and no information available for third parties to help. You are pretty much on your own if you are too adventuresome with this adventure vehicle. Hopefully Rivian would agree to an off road rescuing company to rescue you but then who is responsible for paying the bill?

That is what I expected although I was hoping to get surprised. It would be nice to have an official answer to the "Rescue question" from Rivian but I guess it would be vague and in practice who knows what will happen. Definetly will keep this in mind when planning adventure trips.

Time to ask Customer Service about this? Anyone tried?

HERE is the story of someone (not a Rivian) that went out in to the wilderness and got their truck stuck...

Happy ending, though.

Nice,

hopefully I never get stuck. So what are some typical keywords for this when searching online?

I am thinking some like "Recovery + Services + Location + 4x4 + Offroad +Towing"

TBH, that recovery charge doesn't seem out of hand. I would like to see video of their rig in action.

Based on the article, "such services begin at a hefty $1,600"

Hard to tell what they ended up paying but yeah if it was closer to $1600 is not bad at all for such recovery.
