It's open, because there is something that needs cooling. I am not defending the design, just calling out what it is. If you stuff a sock, it would overheat and fail/catch fire.

I believe one seat has the audio amp and other has the invertor in G1.

A screen like the window screen could work, but I didn't take a close look to see if this is possible. I use a filler cushion between seat and console to prevent this from happening.
The OP said the coin fell between the seat and the console, and was stuck under the seat. He didn't mention the coin going into a vent.

Have a gen1 R1T and had the wife's bracelet fall between the passenger seat and console in the small hole that leads under the carpet. Well since she was heading off to a bachelorette party I used a wand with a weiner on it and duct tape. Had to twirl it like spaghetti but got it out of no man's land down there.

Update form OP:

I retrieved the coin from under the seat. No, it did not slide into a vent; it was just under the seat.

I removed the 4 bolts, two in the front, two in the back, and tilted the seat back. I did not need to remove the seat from the car, nor would I ever want to. I then unclipped the plastic piece that sits directly on the carpet. This was necessary because, even with the seat tilted back it was difficult to get into the crevasse that ate the coin.

Fishing it out with my fingers was impossible, so I put some duct tape on a borescope and dragged the coin to the opening and snagged it. To avoid future accidents, I crammed some aquarium filter medium in the hole. That and the Drop Stop should keep me out of trouble in the future.

Other than working up the nerve to unbolt the seats, the most difficult part was loosening the bolts. Got it done though and, as promised, here is a pic of the coin.

Thanks, everyone for the help on this one.
