Just a quick update, just received a quote from a Rivian certified collision center. As mentioned, earlier, I'm luck in that MA requires insurance companies to cover windshields with no deductible.

However, the certified collision center gave me an estimate of $2,699.46 which is nearly a grand more than the Rivian Service Center charges for the same service. Good lord. The collision center actually told me that insurance "probably won't cover the full amount" so they want me to pay out of pocket and then try to get reimbursed directly from my insurance company.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. This is SUCH an easy problem to solve but feels like Rivian is too busy to fix the things that are making them too busy. Arrrrrgh!!!!

The MA certified repair shop near me declined to attempt the replacement because they can't recalibrate. Safelite and another local glass-only shop are willing to replace the glass but cannot recalibrate. Rivian SC will do it all, but won't work with insurance so I will have to self-pay then file a claim. My SC appt isn't for another 6 weeks, so I still have to drive around with a cracked windshield until then.

Another thing which I know will be an issue is that my crack is right on top of the inspection sticker, so it seems unlikely that will be salvageable and I'll ALSO have to pay for and spend time doing another state inspection.

That looks like the "we don't want to do the job" price, but if you do go for it, they'll make it worth their while. Keep looking for another shop...

Oh yeah, totally agree. My point is that Rivian's selected collision centers are perpetuating the problem. It's so complicated and time consuming it's not worth the while. Their time is better spent buffing scratches and swapping windshields on a Honda.

Yes, and that's the part Rivian should be addressing going forward. Design the vehicle so it's a simple procedure because windshields need to be replaced all the time. It's not a big deal if the battery is difficult to swap out because that's always going to be a SC procedure anyway, but make common items that break often easy to service to keep costs down for owners.
