I use gear guard as security theater. I have no misconceived notions that the thin cable will protect against anyone who really wants to grab my bikes or whatever is in the bed. In fact, I bet someone who pulls hard enough could yank the cable gear guard module straight out of the bed lining.

But it does visibly show stuff is "secured" and can effectively deter opportunistic kids. Which is fine by me.

I'd love to have a beefier cable/chain like OP has made, if anything for the greater visibility.

So true, with battery operated grinders nothing is safe anymore.
Name of game is deterrence, never been about theft-proofing (nothing ever is/was). This would take way longer to cut through than the factory cable. And that may be enough reason for some thieves to turn their attention to easier prey.
