For cooling the pack, not usually. But sometimes preconditioning will kick in when I don't actually need it. For example, if I set a charging stop 30 minutes away, I don't want the dash to be buzzing for half an hour if it's only going to save me 4-5 minutes at the charger.
Well, as long as your very carefully measured thermal readings and your mathematic calculations are better than what the computer in the truck is doing, then I guess you are fine overriding the trucks well designed computer system.

That computer system is not just concerned with speed of charging, but overall conditions for maximum health of the battery pack long-term.

Out of curiosity, whatever happened to that thing that was like an "AC cover" blanket thingy? Looked like it would wrap around / snap onto the compressor, and insulate it / quiet it a bit.

Saw a picture once but my google-fu is failing me. Did that product ever make it to market?

It’s the AC compressor running a cooling cycle, in this case for your battery.

In my opinion it’s flawed software logic running the compressor at full tilt regardless of ambient or battery temperature. In my case the compressor ramps up to full tilt on every single drive cycle before moderating down to low speed or off. Super annoying.

FWIW it didn’t always do this but started after a particular OTA last year. Rivian SC admits and is aware of the issue but has no fix.

I must say, that comments on how to "defeat" this behavior in this thread flabbergast me. You do understand that the vehicle is performing a much needed task (cooling the pack), I'm not sure why you would want to "defeat' it from doing so?
As OP, I was looking to learn what and why to prevent the need for it to run at maximum, reduce stress on the system so it lasts longer.

What would cause you to think that the system is not working exactly as designed? A properly designed system should run at maximum when maximum cooling is called for.

Sure, the Tesla design is more elegant, and does not sound quite as boisterous when running full out, but I actually don't believe there is anything "wrong" with the Rivian setup other than it could use some noise dampening measures.

Reduce the need for maximum cooling, i.e. Not run 350kW when the net kWh/minutes is the same on 150kW.
Given the choice I will pull up to the 150 as opposed to the 350 every single time as well. I am never in so much of a hurry these days that the couple minutes difference matters to me. And yes, lower rates, and lower heats are nicer to my pack.

But even 150 kW can put significant heat into the pack, so if my BMS thinks it wants Max cooling for best results and longevity, I am going to choose not to try to "defeat" it. It does not normally stay in that state very long, and some of these routines the BMS goes through are linear. If there is an ABCD routine the BMS has been triggered into, and I intentionally short circuit that routine at "B", will tasks C and D still get processed? I certainly hope so, but it is food for thought.

I understand that your thought process is different, but you did post that here for the rest of us to evaluate and comment on so I did.
