Dead 12v batteries

I just had my truck towed with locked wheels. I was surprise dragging the wheels didn't cause more racket than it did. Evidently the two 12v batteries in the frunk died. It was explained to me that the latest OTA prevented the cabin batteries from charging from the traction battery when needed. My traction battery had 130 miles of range at the time so it wasn't my fault. I may have had to pay all costs if it was. It is hard to believe that the cabin batteries had to be replaced after being drained for only 2 days. I would think that a new OTA update should be distributed immediately to fix this. It cost Rivian $900 to tow my vehicle to Sacramento plus whatever the batteries cost plus labor and $200 for an Uber for me to pick up my repaired truck. Does anyone know where the charge level for the cabin batteries is shown on the display so I can manually charge them just in case they get low again for any reason.

Nothing you have access to in the truck will show the battery voltage.

Did they not use skids or rollers for the tires? If not I would certainly report the behavior to the company as that is not the proper way to load a vehicle.

They did on the back but not on the front. It worked great though.

Update FYI. My EV6 has a light on the dash which comes on when the traction battery charges the cabin batteries. My previous 2017 Bolt had the same thing happen, after only a month. It was easy to charge it and it never happened again. I traded it in for my R1T August of 2022.

That sucks, I assumed this would be on a screen somewhere. Rivian certainly monitors the voltage (that's a core OBD parameter) and could display it if they wanted to.

Edit: Just saw this in the OTA notes posted here - Rivian displays the Key Fob battery level but not the 12v battery level? Really?

There are some Bluetooth battery monitors out there in the boating and RV part of the world. This would be one solution. Of course, if RIvian knew this was installed and your battery died, they would likely blame this device. It could be wired up with an OBD connector, or the 12VDC socket under the dash.... oh... wait.....

Post script: I was on the phone with Rivian while the batteries were dying. It’s a good thing the first thing that the first warning is it won’t go into drive. But also the doors have to unlock. They sent a tow truck immediately from Sac to Carson City but it had to turn around due to snow in the Sierra’s. If my doors were locked I would have been trapped as it took the tow truck 14 hours to reach the truck. Also I would have to sit in the truck another 3 hours to get to the service center in Sacramento., which the tow company probably wouldn’t allow anyway. Therefore as soon as your vehicle won’t go into drive make sure your doors are unlocked. Or does the Rivian do that automatically.

I just installed bluetooth monitors on both 12v batteries to monitor vampire drain. But a side effect is that I can see if they are getting charged regularly -- they are, in my case.

Hopefully that will work with dead batteries. Even the center console wouldn't open when the batteries died. I'm not going to test it out.

There's literally no electronics involved. First pull unlocks the door and the second pull opens it. Door handles don't need to be presented on the outside of the vehicle to open it as the locking mechanism still works either way.

Some people have had issues due to their cables freezing up but that's an entirely different problem. Odds of every door having that issue at the same time are zero.
