Hello Fellow Forum Friends,

I’m wondering if anyone is having this issue. While on a road trip from SF to LA both my main displays in the truck turned off multiple times.

The truck still drives fine but once it happens they go completely black and unresponsive. I called Rivian support and they had me try a few different resets (left and right buttons on the steering wheel, left button and flashers). This reset did turn the sceeens back on but an hour later or so it would happen again.

Thanks for your help!

Yep. Time for a service visit ASAP. This is a failed AXM, the replacement of which takes permission from Rivian HQ.

And your vehicle won't drive fine. The air compressor for the suspension won't work, no driver aids will work, including blind spot and collision avoidance. Hvac won't work properly, and Alexa won't respond.

You are 100% correct, @godfodder0901! Everything you mentioned doesn’t work. I’m on a road trip so really disappointed. Going to try and schedule something asap.

Sorry to hear that I was right. There is some lead time with getting the part, so the sooner the better. 1 (855) RIVIAN5 is open 24/7...

Following up on this thread. I first encountered the issue on Nov 21st where the screens would shut off mid-drive. I finally got a service appointment on Dec 12th at the South San Francisco spot (wasn't pumped I had to wait nearly three weeks). It has been two weeks since the truck was dropped off and I finally got confirmation that it was the control module failing in the truck and that it needed to be replaced (I haven't seen the official service summary but once I do I can confirm the exact part). Still waiting to get my truck returned and will post a final summary hopefully in the next two weeks. The bonus is that the SSF Service Center now has a few loaner trucks and I was able to snag one given the severity of the issue so that transition hasn't been super tough.

Well, we finally have a resolution and finally, have the truck back. It took from Dec 12th to January 11th to resolve all issues. Long story short the SSF service center "Removed and replaced the Module, Driver Assistance/Audio/Display". I am assuming this is the AXM part that @godfodder0901 mentioned. I was told it took so long because the first replacement they installed also failed and required a second module.

When the first replacement module was installed all of the OTA updates were failing to load. I would get notifications on my phone that an update was ready and then would see when it would fail. In fact, they finally realized that the last software version on the first replaced module was from before the first commercial Rivian (not really sure where they found this module). They finally sourced a new one last week and it took about 3-4 days for delivery and another 2-3 days to ensure OTAs were installed correctly.

Apparently, I now own the record for the longest total time for a vehicle to be at the SSF service center (something I am not sure I am proud to have won :CWL:).

Sounds right. They have to get corporate buy off to replace these modules, so there is added delay in the process.

@dtb369 ... glad you finally got your truck back!

What we really need on this site is a "Issue/resolution" wiki that can leverage the collective experiences of owners regarding faults and their ultimate solutions.

That is a great suggestion! Would definitely help owners feel like they have a bit more say/advice that they could provide.

I am having this issue.

It happened twice on a trip from Portland, OR to Vancouver BC. We abandoned the trip after the second failure. the displays go black, and neither of the resets fix the problem. The displays eventually reboot after 30 to 40 minutes.

Rivian took the vehicle, did diagnostics, and determined that it was a cooling issue, and they replaced a cooling valve.

On the first long distance trip after the repair, it failed again. This time at the end of a DC fast charge. The displays again came back after 40 minutes or so.

It definitely seems like a cooling issue. And I wonder if we are doing long term damage to the life of the batteries?

We have another scheduled service with Rivian in March. I will update when I have more info on this problem.

I don’t know, sure sounds like exactly what I had and it was the computer processor (or AXM module that Godfodder mentioned).

My screens would shut off after an extended period of driving but then come back on. Once they fixed the issue with the module it’s no longer happened.

I’m glad you got your truck back after a month at the SC. 2 weeks to diagnose such an obvious failure is absurd. 2 more weeks to swap it is nuts. It tells me the SC’s are hamstrung by too many concurrent high priority failures and blocked by approval bureaucracy that lacks scale.

Seems like a computer cooling issue, not a battery cooling issue...

We have had the same shut down of both displays, however, hours came back within about as long as it usually takes to do a reset.
It’s only happened once, about three weeks ago. seemed at the time like a generic computer glitch, however, since both displays went at the same time that implies that two separate computers went at the same time. That seems unlikely.
Really freaked out my wife at the time because we were driving at night on a rural interstate in Utah. Fortunately, exterior lights continued functioning as did all of the usual manual driving features.

It could be the voltage acting up. Take a look at the battery voltage and make sure it's in the right range. If it's too low or too high, that could be causing some unexpected problems. Also, check all the connections for the display system. The bumps on the road during your trip might have caused a loose connection could be causing those random blackouts.
