Added a pool noodle to my garage door after an unfortunate clearance incident yesterday (little scratches! Noooooooo!). Works a treat but I worry about the R2 hitting it and trying to push past every time I open it in the garage. Anyone else have history with how durable the lift gate motor is? I don't want to shorten its overall life if I can help it.

I've never heard of one needing replacement. They had some issues with the R1S because of the weird angle the connections have, it could get twisted into a position it would bind. But never wore it out.

On our Demo drive, I asked the question and the Rivian rep said he didn't know so we tried it but no success. I want the R2 bad enough that I'm willing to always back into our garage where the gate can open fully. Another feature to consider, is the rear window being lowered can give access to items without raising the gate so no issue there.

You can manually stop it from opening all the way by pressing the button when it gets to the desired height. But no way for it to remember the height as of right now. Hopefully something that comes in a software update. A 2nd button press will close it. I tested it in the showroom because I was wondering if a 2nd press would close it, or continue opening the rest of the way.

No liftgate height option is strange. Usually you just lift the liftgate to the position you want and hold down the open/close button for 5 sec to set.
They could probably do it through software based on run time. Ask for the feature on reddit and tag software chief u/WassymRivian. If feasible and there is enough demand, good chance they'll consider it. The problem is each individual motors might run at slightly different speeds and at different conditions. Without sensors to inform software where max and min limits are, performance might be inconsistent.

You can also just grab it and stop it by hand.

I can confirm from 2 block parties and a test drive that setting a specific height for the rear trunk lid to open is not an option on R2, and I found out it is not even an option on R1S.

Rivian rep I spoke with about said it's not something they are focused on at all. It's honestly the one thing that might keep me from buying R2 as my garage is low and I don't want to have every family member need to remember to hit the button or grip it hard to stop it. Someone will forget, it's just a matter of time. It's a bit challenging to do with the button as it's not visible until the trunk lid raises fairly high so you only have a few seconds to get the timing right.

It's definitely one of those things you don't think about until you have a situation like OP. Heck, my i4 hatch hit the top of the garage and got scratched.....but it has a height adjustment.

Super cool on the 12v! I wish Rivian would make this and high amperage 12v winch power available as addons .

I'm reminded of software and of course many other products that make me wonder, "Do these people actually use the thing they sell?" Or perhaps do a proper feature comparison against their competitors?

As great a car the R2 is this is a clear miss. So obvious that it really had to be a choice. We can only hope that there is a plan to implement a software solution.
