I have a reservation for the R2 (shocker) and with all the excitement about the upcoming reveal of the configurator and pricing and such.... I wanted to be sure I'm making the correct assumption that 3/12 is the date that reservation holders will finally be able to actually place the order for the vehicle...

...or is the release of the configurator just yet another teaser step in the process of actually making the vehicle purchase?

You will not be able to place the order on 3/12. It's just going to show the prices, options, etc.

What we call the configurator is just a page on the web site which lets you choose the color and options for your reservation. We won't know what the choices are until the configurator goes live. Rivian uses that to plan production. With the R1, they allowed you to change options at any time (and even from R1T to R1S and back again), which I think caused some problems. I expect that with the R2 you might have to lock in your selections.

Regardless, some unknown time after you have configured your vehicle Rivian will contact you with an expected delivery date range. Then at nearer to your expected delivery date you will get the email asking you to start the purchase process - arranging payment/lease/loan/licensing/registration/insurance/etc - all on-line.

We don't know yet whether the configurator will go live on 3/12 - I hope so - but we will at least be told details of which models will be released first, along with pricing and specs.

Although I didn't respond, the experience you got here is what I think most of us try to strive for. Hopefully you get a nice R2 as soon as possible, in a great condition & that you have a blast being a Rivian owner!

3/12 is just the day Rivian will be willing to answer every question about the launch R2. So if you can't order on 3/12, you'll find out when you can.

Why do I feel like we will get little to no info on the $45k base model on 3/12?

I think the general consensus is that the "base" ($45kish) models won't be available until 2027 at the very earliest (and, as we all know, pre-announced pricing is a crapshoot in general, even though Rivian has been pretty adamant they will achieve that price at some point).

Also worth keeping in mind that Rivian is prioritizing reservations for existing R1 owners, so non-Rivian owners should expect delays in being able to configure / order even if they placed an extremely early reservation.

As always, the best advice is just to wait and see what we learn on 3/12 and then take things as they come from there. Cheers!

When the configurator for the Gen2 R1's went up, there was info on all the trims, but you couldn't purchase all of them (the quad was only able to be reserved). I have a feeling that things will be similar for R2 on the 12th.

Also be aware that they might do a process similar to what happened with the R1 - “The Shop”. It’s a fair assumption that they will let you build a custom configuration, and use this aggregated data to plan batches of production of the same color, etc. vehicle based on popularity, and then make some of that production available as a shop purchase closer to your place in queue. or wait for your custom config possibly much later. That’s what happen to those who ordered yellow and red R1 - the least popular colors. So far, the config/build/delivery model has not been like ordering an ICE from Ford or BMW and knowing your build date weeks or months in andvance. Don’t expect that.

Thank you for the info. At what point in the process are you "committed" to a purchase?

For context, I'm a 2nd day reservation holder so I'm hoping my number won't come up until late in 2026 as I won't purchase until Lidar/Gen3 hardware is launched on the R2. I'd love to start the process but I don't want to be locked in on a non-lidar purchase so I'm curious at what point in this process am I committed?
