I have a long road trip coming up next week so I ordered an A2Z NACS adapter. I wanted to test it before I hit the road so I went to a Supercharger site that appeared on the Tesla app as available to non Teslas. I also have a Tesla Y so I have a Tesla account and the app. I also have 5,000 "free" miles from Tesla, so I am hoping to use them on this road trip, so that was part of the test. After a couple of false start operator error issues, mainly I did not have the adapter securely inserted on to to the Tesla end and then on to the Rivian, I was able to initiate charging. I limited the charging to just 6 K's because I it was just a test run.

I used the Tesla app to initiate charging so I would not be charged in my Rivian account and hopefully my free miles would be applied. Net result is that not only were my free Tesla miles not applied to the charge session, but I was charged $2.94 in both my Rivian and Tesla accounts which I have confirmed on my visa account.

So any ideas what I am doing wrong? I am sure I can straighten it out with Visa but is this going to happen all the time? How do I get my free miles from Tesla?

OK, I just did some fine print Tesla research. Apparently the free miles are specific to the Y. Which is my wife's car and never goes anywhere! Now I just have to solve the double billing issue.

Remove your cc from the Rivian app. I did same test with no cc in Rivian app all went well

Good to know. I thought about that, but there are very convenient RAN chargers on my route, PHX-Kingman-Barstow-Buttonwood-and north along I-5 almost to Canada, so I was hoping I would not be deleting and reloading my cc from the Rivian app. The Tesla chargers are for the holes in the RAN system so I am not reliant on EA like I was last year. Thanks for confirming though. I may have to do that. Seems like it is a glitch in the transition to NACS.

I think it was just a fluke/glitch. Many have charged both ways and not report being double charged. Dispute the charge? And for those with Supercharger membership, you won't be able to enjoy the ~20% lower rate membership gets you if you restrict yourself to plug-n-charge.

If you just plug in the charger Rivian will do plug and charge and initiate the charge and bill you.

If you want to use the Tesla app, you have to be sure to initiate the charge from the Tesla app before you plug into your vehicle. Make sure you follow the sequence of attaching the adapter to Tesla plug first, and making sure it is latched, then initiate the charge and plug in. If you have to fix the latch AFTER you've plugged in, that where the problem happens because the charge wasn't initiated yet until the latch is fixed.

I don't have the A2Z adapter, but this is what has been reported by others in several other threads.

My experience, when we had the network issues on the Rivian I was testing my A2Z adapter, since there was no network connectivity I had to initiate the charge from my Tesla App, was not charged by Tesla, the charge went through Rivian. I tested again a couple of days later, just plugged in and the vehicle initiated the charge and again billed through Rivian.

Neither session was billed through Tesla for me.

I know if you plug in first then use the app it confuses the system and it hits you on both sides. I suspect between the attempts, it switched from app billing to plug and charge and ended up hitting both ends. I’m sure they’ll fix this eventually. I’d report that to both Tesla and Rivian.

Thanks for all the input. Rivian plug and pay seems to be the best option. I was testing the Tesla app because I wanted to access free miles for my R1T which I now realize I cannot do. So no need to use the Tesla app. Even though RAN has good coverage on my trip, I will still need to use Supercharging for some segments if I want to avoid EA.

I agree with this, probably because of the false starts. What did Tesla say when you complained?

Check out the Bluedot app, 20% off all charges if you use their preloaded debit card. And 30 cents flat rate at the two they directly support, which is Chargepoint and EVgo.

Thanks for the information. We do not do a lot of road trips. Mostly home charging at 8-10 cents a kWh. We do subscribe to EA and CP for road trips but will probably drop them now that RAN's are more available and we have Tesla access. It's not so much a few cents a kWh in savings as it is accessibility and reliability. Not to mention better locations.

I don't have a Tesla account so they can't charge me. If you don't activate anything from the Tesla app, they won't be able to associate the Rivian when you plug in and will bill Rivian.
