I put new shoes on the R1S Saturday. I bought a set of 20" take offs from the forum here. I went online and ordered 4 Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3's from Discount Tire. Aside from the local DT telling me the tires weren't available, despite them showing available on both DT's website and Tirerack's site (DT and TR are corporate relatives), the DT customer service team sorted that out and the local DT was great.

The new wheels look great and the "tyres" are great. Although there's been no great snow accumulation, yet, the Nokian's are quiet, smooth, and not bad looking. Range has taken a hit, but that's expected.

I did not have the R1S recalibrated from 22's to 20's, but dual GPS readings show the speedometer is now accurately showing speed, compared to previously being higher than actual.

Overall I'm very pleased with the Nokians so far.

Took my new General Grabber Arctic tires out skiing this weekend. Anecdotally, they had amazing traction on about 6" of fresh snow & I'm observing ~10-20%+ greater efficiency over the stock 20" Pirellis. It normally takes me ~65-70% for a round trip but this only took me 56% SOC.

What raw mi/kWh did you get? And what size are they?

@SeaGeo and others, what efficiency are you seeing with your winter tires? (Please include tire size, tire model, R1S/R1T, and dual/quad)

I'm eyeing another 2363 set for winter, I honestly don't need the ATs right now and the ride is rough. Those are better for spring and fall when I'm actually off-roading. Most of my late fall/winter exposure is pavement with occasional snow/ice in the passes.

Following this thread. I have the original 20” AS Goodyear Territory tires on my Gen2. I have made the seasonal switch to the Nokian Hakkapellitta‘s on my Model Y, which is what we’ll use for long trips. Debating if I need to get fully winter tires on the truck yet for my local winter mostly local driving in Maine. We tend to get more slush and ice than snow these days.

I have 275/65r20 Nokian LT3s on my Quad R1T. I have 275/60r20 michelin X-ice Snow SUV on our R1S, the Michelin have been on both a quad and dual motor.

This is my third winter with the LT3's, and second with the Michelin. In my experience, I have found that the tire efficiency for either gets obfuscated by driving frequency, drive length, and obviously environmental factors in the winter for daily driving. I've seen pretty large swings just from commuting more or less frequently.

What I can say is that I've done a 1,000 mile round trip road trip on both sets of tires that I've done several times during the summer and I haven't qualitatively observed a significant difference. For example, from the Puget Sound to Ellensburg I've looked back and I have two summer charges where I arrives with 44 and 49%. The winter charge example had me arriving with 54%. Conversely I have made it to Hermiston in a straight shot before, but I would have arrived there with -3% last winter.

If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that I think the Michelin probably have slightly better efficiency than the AT tires, and that the LT3 are slightly worse. I can't back that up with a 1-to-1 comparison though.

I actually prefer the Michelins, but since they don't come in a 116, at this point I'd probably just get a set of Nokian R5 in a 275/60r20 size.

I went with Hankook Winter I Pike X 275/60R20 due to 116 load index (Micheline X-ICE, Nokians R5 in this size only have 115), availability at my local Discount Tire, thread pattern/noise, low weight (42 lbs), and price ($211 per tire).

I put them on EV Sportline Stealies but haven't installed them yet since we haven't hit winter yet (planning to install them in early November).

I only wish Rivian would make tire size changes easy via menus since 275/60R20 is the same size as what Rivian offers with the 21 inch wheels standard. Come on guys, Porsche has been doing it for years, what are you afraid of :)
I bought the Hakka R5. They are 116 rated.

Hi, I am one of the engineers of the Goodyear tire designed for Rivian. I am pleased with the winter performance of this tire on my R1T. Hopefully, you will be too!

I have 21” OEM - would it be fine to go to Tahoe and back? No off roading or trails… just pure road…

Does anyone you suggestions for snow cables?

Has any one tried Michelin defender LTX M/S2 on snow?

I use defender series on Audi Q5 and they work great.
Bsbhullar - we have driven regularly from Bay Area to Tahoe for more than 20 years. Many, many folks do fine with all seasons, and I'm guessing the newest all season tires may do better than years' past. Many who live full time in Tahoe run all seasons - some do winter tires on one car.

But there is a pretty big difference between all season tires and dedicated winter tires, which I've always done. So many times I've watched others spin out in front of me (I80, Northwoods Blvd, Alpine Meadows Road if you know North Lake) and I ease back and in many cases come to a complete stop on the same hill and once mayhem settles down, ease right around them.

You still need to slow down and go easy on the throttle, but the grip uphill, downhill, cornering is all pretty unbelievable when running dedicated winter tires.

Ran the Blizzak LT on my truck last winter...performed well and not a bit hit to efficiency. When I run these down I'll probably give the Hakka LT3 a try.
I think I see a bit of efficiency pickup when I am late in the spring switching out the Blazzaks. Very happy with them.

Just went up to the mountains with 2000 feet elevation gain getting equal to 276 miles of range over 146 miles (will be better on way down). EPA rated 270 Launch Edition Gen1 20 ATs.

Thought I would contribute another tire option to this thread. Have been running Hankook Winter i*Pike X studded W429A, 275 60r20 on 2024 Gen 1 R1S Quad Large for a couple weeks now. Did a round trip to Edmonton from Calgary.

Total Distance: 638 km
Efficiency: 3.38 km/kwh
95% highway driving using highway assist
Highway Speed was set to 110km/h there and 105km/h return.
Outside temperature was 1C in Calgary and dropped to -9C in Edmonton
Vehicle was preheated before departing and then sat outside for 4 hours before returning.

After about 1000km with the LT275/65R20 Blizzaks, and having had Nokian Hakka LTs (both studded and not), Hakka 7th, 8th, 9th gen and R3 on other SUVs:

+The Blizzaks ride quite well on the dry, especially for a truck tyre: I would say better than the Hakka LT and on par with R3s. Very little squirm.

+Efficiency seems pretty good. As several others reported here, it was on par with the Scorpions for the period before winter really kicked in. Cannot compare with Nokians, but ive had noticeable reductions in MPGs with them on other cars… vs Michelin X ice etc.

=Ice performance seems a bit better than unstudded Hakka LTs, maybe on par with Hakka 9th gen or R3s;

-Driving on really greasy stuff like ice pellets or deeply slushed unplowed urban streets, I find them much less good for lateral stability and steering. It seems the thread gets packed and overwhelmed much faster than Nokians of all series.

I hadn’t used Blizzaks in a while. I am not regretting my purchase, its still a very good tire, but if I had to do it again, I would likely go back to Nokian LT3s.

My quad R1S is still a beast in deep snow – soft sand mode = park anywhere even after a 30 inch snowfall like we just got here… But jeez having the ability to turn off regen would help for highway driving in hairy stuff.

I've run the studded Nokian Hakka LT3 for two winters now. I did controlled testing against the OEM 20" Pirelli AT tires and they have the same efficiency (within measurement error). The studded tires are actually quieter. I like them fine and have them inflated to the regular placard value of 48 psi.

A couple updates, a new tire Continental Vikingcontact 8, only ~39#, is worth considering if looking for max winter driving range…
