Great idea? or $299 scare tactic sales pitch?
EVject
“Electric vehicles prevent driving while charging. You must exit your car, disconnect the charger, then rush back to the safety of your vehicle.

EVject offers you a better option. It works with your Tesla’s built in safety systems to allow you to stop charging and shift into Drive without leaving your car.”

Definitely a scare tactic, but I can understand why some would want it. Charging stations are often tucked away in the darkest corner of a weird parking lot. I bet it results in more accidental “breakaways” than necessary ones…

Just as realistic as getting robbed at a gas station, if you're paying attention they'll find someone who isn't.

Keep your head up, be aware of your surroundings and don't fixate on your phone. Otherwise anything that happens will be a surprise.

Just curious - does anyone have any facts that point to this as a problem? Or is it all a matter of how you "feel", exacerbated by ads like this and by Tesla marketing a bulletproof car?

I can't recall ever reading about a carjacking at an EV charging station.

But shootings/carjackings at gas stations are in the news all the time - mainly because of the attached convenience store I would think.

If I’m not mistaken, Rivian won’t let you drive off with a charger plugged in. I tried at my house for science (put it in drive) and it wouldn’t drive.

Correct, this apparently override’s Tesla’s (it says currently only available for Tesla but non-Tesla coming soon) safety system that won’t let you drive and it is breakaway…

EDIT - I was confusing this with a different product. Deleting content to avoid spreading misinformation.

It's a clever idea. A little bit of scare tactic marketing. But I think as far as this being a problem, it's not necessarily a problem anymore than it is at a gas station. You're dealing with many different locations. Some locations will be nice and in nice areas other locations will be run down, sketchy and in a not so good area. Best thing you can do is plan ahead research the charging stops On plugshare and know what you're rolling into.

I have been to a few charging stations late at night and a couple during the day that were very sketchy. This is another reason why I tell people never to run their battery all the way. Flat always pull up there with at least a 10 or 20% buffer. If you have to go somewhere else and charge, you're able to do so without too much of a problem.

I'd rather have an adapter that doubles as a porta-pottie. Charging at a closed-bathroom stop is a bigger threat than carjacking!

This is a worry that I've had during late night charging sessions at deserted Walmart parking lots.

It's a big country and I'm honestly surprised that there haven't been any widely publicized charger station robberies.

I generally travel with my very alert and protective German Shepherd who provides a sense of security better than any gun. Dogs not handguns!

A breakaway function is a good idea and could give peace of mind for those that are allergic to dogs.

It doesn't override anything. The device is just a spring that is constantly pushing on the car and trying to pull the charger out.

When you are charging, the tesla has a physical lock that holds the charger in place so the spring does nothing while you are charging. If you press the stop charging button the lock automatically disengages. Without the lock holding the charger in place, the spring in this device can pull the charger out. The car will then let you drive since the charger is no longer connected.

I don't see how it could be adapted for non-teslas since on a J1772/CCS cable the lock is a lever on the handle that is not controlled by the car. Perhaps they mean that it is coming to non-teslas in 2025. When non-teslas have Tesla style charge ports.
That's not how it works at all - there is no spring pulling it out. It's a one-time use device. It literally breaks in half, self-destructing in the process. The Web site links to some videos of it, and also discusses it in detail, as well as having a free replacement program if you send them a video of the "escape".

Thanks. I should have looked more closely before assuming it worked like the spring loaded devices that have been around for a long time.

I wonder what the reasoning was for developing this product? Why would anyone want to pay 5x as much for a one time use product?
