Gen 1 Quad R1S. Slashed the inner sidewall of a Pirelli AT in the Colorado mountains this weekend. Bad/beginner driver, what can I say. Luckily, brought a full-size spare and was able to change it with a Big Red bottle jack. (Barely enough travel when starting from flat - different discussion).
Now I need to replace the dead tire, but I'm not sure the best way.
I've done a 5-tire rotation first at 5,000 miles and recently 10,000 miles. All of the tires, including the dead one, are measuring for me in the vicinity of 9/32 tread depth give or take 1/32. I believe that when new their tread depth is 13/32.
My question: what is a good option here for a full-size spare? Here's how I see it.
1. Buy a new Pirelli and add it into the rotation. But isn't the difference in tread depth between the current tires and a new one too much?
2. Buy a new Pirelli and only use it as a spare, go to 4-tire rotations. Don't like this idea.
3. Sell my 4 healthy Pirellis and buy 5 of something else. My wallet doesn't like this idea but I do.
Advice please!
