Gen 1 Quad R1S. Slashed the inner sidewall of a Pirelli AT in the Colorado mountains this weekend. Bad/beginner driver, what can I say. Luckily, brought a full-size spare and was able to change it with a Big Red bottle jack. (Barely enough travel when starting from flat - different discussion).

Now I need to replace the dead tire, but I'm not sure the best way.

I've done a 5-tire rotation first at 5,000 miles and recently 10,000 miles. All of the tires, including the dead one, are measuring for me in the vicinity of 9/32 tread depth give or take 1/32. I believe that when new their tread depth is 13/32.

My question: what is a good option here for a full-size spare? Here's how I see it.
1. Buy a new Pirelli and add it into the rotation. But isn't the difference in tread depth between the current tires and a new one too much?
2. Buy a new Pirelli and only use it as a spare, go to 4-tire rotations. Don't like this idea.
3. Sell my 4 healthy Pirellis and buy 5 of something else. My wallet doesn't like this idea but I do.

Advice please!

4. Buy a used pirelli from eBay with 8,9, or 10/32 tread. May have to wait a couple weeks but they can often be found for <~$120. Edit: the other reply is perfect. They also sell on eBay if you prefer.

I was going to suggest buy 5 of your choice of replacement tires. Store 4 and mount the 5th. Go with the 4 tire rotation. Or just buy 1 of your future tires and go with the 4 tire rotation.

But buying "pre-owned" is probably the cheapest route.

Too bad you're not in Oregon, I could GIVE you a free OEM 20" tire. I have 2 extra.

I bought a used OEM tire with 10/32 tread depth off of eBay and it worked out perfectly. I paid about $105 shipped. Try and make sure there are no plugs or patches.

Recently had a scrap tire on my setup too, have about 1-1.5 years on them so I didn't want to spend money on a new one.

My tire guys had a used one of the right size (more highway oriented) and I'll just use it as a spare, if I damage a tire I can easily use it to get to a tire shop. Didn't cost me anything.
