Remember, it's not real wood. I'd leave it be unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing
It is real wood, it's just closer to a veneer than anything else.

Im worried about spittle and other stuff. I know its kinda gross but I spend all my time in the car taking work calls and or talking to the wife, not to mention screaming kids who will want to touch the display all the time.

I am seriously worried about spittle or even coffee getting in the grain of the wood. When I touched it in Venice it was not particularly smooth.

I’d pull the dash and refinish it outside the car so I could get consistent results throughout or not do it at all. But I’m also a masochist when it comes to these endeavors.

Eventually, someone will be forced to do this due to a cracked dash, failed component behind the dash, or even an upfit from Explore to Adventure trim. Probably will be a few years out, but it’s going to be an epic thread.

I am very tempted to stain the OC wood with something approximating FE brown. That stain looks so good.

But I'll wait to see how others fair before attempting any wood modifications.

It would be great if we could get a sample to experiment with prior to apply anything to the truck.

Man I had to check the date to make sure this thread was not an April fools joke. Sanding the wood sounds insane to me. I do plenty of woodworking and this wood is does not look like it would react well to any sort of sanding at all. Maybe a very soft polish but I am confident RIVIAN would not help you replace the wood trim if you destroy it. I do agree that it's rough to the touch and feels a bit splintry but my hope is it lasts the test of time.

I'm more curious how it's going to stand up to all the dust/dirt that will accumulate from running trails and how easy it will be to clean.

Just wipe it off. And if that does not work, some light sanding will probably fix it. ? (I’ve had too much to drink tonight)

Someone did this with his Tesla and shared his results here. The model 3/Y also has a wood dash that is a little rough as well.
The color he did is the exact color I wish OC would come with.

Absolutely. Though that makes me wonder about applying a new veneer over whatever the subsurface is. I wonder if a vaccume press would do the trick. Maybe put on something exotic like burled or tiger maple. Or go crazy with some zebrawood..
