The question I have is whether the extended warranty would have covered this?

Rivian care or the third party options?

Yes, examples on here if them being covered. Buying one for about $4k at low miles and years is really the only way to keep these vehicles past warranty.

Sucks, but stuff like that is exactly why we see so many "I'd never own this thing out of warranty" comments here. Aging Gen 1 vehicles have the possibility of creating a really bad rep for Rivian if not handled properly. We know the half-shafts are an exotic design that have been causing issues since the day the R1T was released, the air suspension has also been problematic since the R1T launch. Rivian could offer warranty extensions (which is not uncommon in the automotive world) for these commonly failing parts/systems if they so desired.

I wish. But given the need to become profitable, they would need to weigh good will vs potential survival.

I suppose you could say that good will buys them additional brand loyalty, which is why I give them a bit of slack considering the preorder deal.

I know this doesn’t help those that have Gen 1s but I’m crossing my fingers we see less of these catastrophic failures in gen 2+. My understanding on Gen 2 is that these are the major improvements that should theoretically help.

* Single-Piece Cast Aluminum Subframe: Replaced the multi-piece welded front cradle with a single structural casting, drastically improving rigidity and eliminating weld fatigue under high motor torque.
* Redesigned Air Bags (Firestone): Upgraded rubber bladders and spring rates to reduce micro-leaks, prevent sagging, and protect the air compressor from continuous running/burnout.
* Revised Dampers & Bushings: Updated internal damper valving and rubber isolation mounts to eliminate low-speed "clunking" and front-end chatter over rough surfaces.
* Isolated High-Pressure Hydraulics: Redesigned "jounce lines" and fittings for the kinetic roll control system, stopping fluid weeping and reducing hydraulic line noise.
* Slimmed-Down Knuckles: Weight-optimized aluminum suspension knuckles with opened-up pocketing.
* Smarter Software & Thermal Cut-Offs: Improved "comfort valve" logic for smoother bump absorption at low speeds, along with auto-shutoff thermal protection for the air pump.

I hope there’s a way we can pressure Rivian to provide a cost effective way to maintain and service this suspension - it’s my favorite aspect of the R1T and I’m willing to pay a bit to maintain it. They really need to provide an ability for 3rd parties to service though.

OP sorry for your troubles. This is the reason I decided to pay for an extended warranty. $5k extended warranty to cover me until 100,000 miles is a bargain based on the post warranty out of pocket cost people appear to be experiencing.

OP, since you are just out of the 60k warranty, I would push for a "good will" repair by Rivian. Done that multiple times with BMW. You can even try to negotiate to pay half, and Rivian covers the other half. Hope it works for you.

I tried this. My dampers went at 61k on my 23 R1S. Solid no was the response. Inform d it was a common issue w many having to do both front and rear dampers at a cost of 5k per side. The suspension is garbage. It rides rough, is noisy, and clearly is not durable. I won’t be purchasing another one after I’m done with the current one.

2024 R1T, gen 1, 64,000 miles

Truck was just sitting in the drive way after running errands all morning. Get in to go pick up kids and “front suspension serviced” red light on and stuck in lowest height

Get it to the service center right away and they get back to me the driver side failed and have to replace everything because I have older generation. 7k out of warranty.

I appreciate the service center getting me in same day and rapid diagnosis but being just out of warranty really sucks.

And they are charging to take off running boards and will not put them back on.

Being told “you did get 64,000 miles out of them so that’s good” and “you can take it somewhere else for repairs if you like” didn’t sit well.

I had to have rear dampers replaced @ 71,000 miles. Was charged $3400 - but they did change the 12 v battery at no charge.

My truck is currently at the sc for a few minor things, they ended up replacing the front half shafts...stocking sound when lightly accelerating or decelerating. All these suspension issues have me a bit worried.

Who all is everyone using as an extended warranty that is reasonable and covers all these issues?

Mine is through XCare, but I have not had to use it yet. There are several members on this forum using XCare that appear to have had good results with covered issues.

Thought about "do I really want to test the payload capacity out of warranty". Then I reverted back to my #1 vehicle rule- if I can't use it as intended, I don't want to own it.

Bingo! I've considered this a few times "how will I use the truck outside of warranty?" and I keep coming back to the fact that I bought this to really use on a daily basis for commuting, renos, yard work, and back country adventures. I'll keep using it to do those things well outside of warranty for years to come.. I hope.

Sorry to hear about your sour experience; it would be helpful for us Gen1 owners to know what to expect. What exactly did they say needed to be replaced (damper, air shock, etc.), and what did they quote you to get her back up and running?

One last comment I'll make:
Ironically, one of the big things that sold me on the R1T was a 2021 Motortrend article on the R1T completing the TAT all stock! I figured if it can do the TAT, it will breeze through daily activities. Ironically, if I recall correctly, the only issue they had was a busted damper....

Where was this? That is such a bullshit unacceptable answer and displays such a poor attitude. I would be calling for the service manager or even further up the chain. It is one thing to have to deliver the bad news, but another altogether to basically not give two shits.

I think the dampers are made by Monroe I believe; not known for their quality. Air springs could be Firestone as others have said.
