I use the Gear Guard Cable (GGC) every time I put my bike in the truck bed and think it is a great way to easily secure things. I don't want to test this but I'm guessing it could be cut very easily. This means it is only good for casual theft. So for a little extra protection I was thinking of covering it with something orange and having it say "High Voltage". At this point I don't have any good ideas on what to cover it with but it will have to look pretty good to be convincing. Any ideas?

All cable locks are relatively easy to cut, although the jacket on the gear guard cable might be enough to foul a cutting blade. Get a kryptonite New York chain and mill the end down to fit in the gear guard receptacle ?

All consumer size cables can be cut pretty easily with a grinder or heavy duty bolt cutters. The best you are hoping for is they will slow down the thief long enough it’s not worth the risk. And if I understand correctly, the gear guard cables should trigger the cameras and even the alarm?

I think they wanted to do that but I am pretty sure they are just dumb cables.

My point is to make the cable look dangerous. As if it were electrified. It might thwart someone from trying to cut it. I think of this protection as a step or two above casual thieving.

I could use a real chain connected to the bed for actual protection. But the GGC is so convenient.

I didn't realize that heat shrink tubing was available in so many colors and sizes.

You can cover it in some orange corrugated cable cover. I think that's what the high voltage cut cables for first responders looks like.

How about just adding actual high voltage to fry the horse thieves. Backlit label the cable.

Just go to your local farm supply store, get an electric fence power supply and a bit of wire, plug that in to the outlet into the bed.

Ah yeah, milling a hardened chain sounds like a great idea, I'll let you know how it works out.

I'm actually quite curious what the hardness of the chains are now. I'll have to grab one from home and test it at work.
