I love the hear tunnel and use it constantly. Tools, wetsuit, mountain bike hydration pack, shoes helmet and can recharge drill batteries etc.

Been testing my custom tunnel shuttle for ~6 months under heavy use.

Don't forget the gear tunnel door is a seat as well as a step.
AND storage (compressor hoses; first aid kit - or whatever you can fit in that compartment).

I love the GT and use it all the time. Wine can be put in there when out tasting and with the passthrough we can keep that area temp controlled. We have soft sided coolers and duffels for travel and they fit in the GT with ease. I was out last weekend digging holes in the yard for some plants and needed other sit down for a glass of water...popped open the GT door and it made a perfect seat to cool off in the shade. While doing said work, I also hit an irrigation pipe underground and the piece of 5' PVC I bought fit easily in there as well...

Keep the Great Tunnel!

Switching to an R1S from my T there are only two things I miss. The Meridian sound, and the gear tunnel. I stored my stinky rock climbing gear in there and now I do in my trunk and it stinks up my whole trunk where it was a non issue in the gear tunnel.

For my use case I find the gear tunnel very useful. My only backseat riders are my daughter and dog, neither of which have issues with the space. I mostly like it for hauling my ski gear. Me ski bag is the exact shape of the gear tunnel...so much so that I'm surprised Rivian hasn't created branded version they can overcharge for 😄. I also love the gear tunnel doors to sit on while getting my ski boots on.

I'm kind of the opposite. I think the gear tunnel is a brilliant bit of storage. We use it often during road trips as we can store an obscene amount of gear/luggage in the gear tunnel, frunk and bed and keep it completely out of site.

Something that come up this weekend when traveling with my wife...

Some of her cosmetics were ruined because her bag was in the truck bed and it was an extremely hot day. If I had put her temperature sensitive stuff in the gear tunnel it would have been fine. I did think to put the wine in there. (I have my priorities straight.)

I disagree. We've owned our Rivian for about a month and we use the gear tunnel more than the front or bed. Also, the ability to use the door as a step, table, or seat has been nice. Also, every time I wash the truck I use it as a step to clean the top.

That said, I respect your opinion.

We love our gear tunnel - or "the chunnel" as we call it. I was pulling a shopping bag out and a passing motorist stopped and marveled at what a great idea it was. When we are on a mainland shopping trip it nicely holds 4 wine or liquor boxes.

The gear tunnel is sick. Everyone who complains about people or car seats in the backseat of the r1t needs more dogs and fewer children or friends. Get a mini van, nerds!
