About a month ago (yes - within a week of getting the truck back from what I hope is the end of its saga), I began noticing glitches in the drive and incident camera recordings—most notably, footage from different cameras blending together. I’ve also seen several camera angles missing from Gear Guard during motion events. In addition, the truck-bed camera view sometimes “buffers” while driving. Resetting the system doesn’t fix the recording issues, but it does restore smooth live viewing of all cameras for a day or two. I have a mobile service visit scheduled in a couple of weeks, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems. I don’t suspect the drive itself (though I’ll try another), since the files aren’t corrupted and SMART reports show no errors.

(1) +1 for try a different drive.

(2) If you play the files back on a computer does it show the same issue?

(3) Maybe it's ghosts. 👻

#1 - I’m going to swap with the other T7 in our R1S, but don’t hold out much hope. I’m also going to change the cable as well.

#2 - the files themselves are fine - they contain this messed up footage and show no signs of being corrupted themselves.

#3 - this truck may well be haunted, it’s starting to look like a plausible explanation. Have other issues cropping up with the piano black trim coming loose on the drivers side A pillar and odd GPU coil whine like noises after driving for ~15 mins on warm days too.

Swapped the drives and cables - unfortunately no difference. Mobile service was out this morning who said they have started to see some issues with the Ambarella CV5 in the AXM2 module - and now have internal documentation on how to re-seat it if required (which makes it sound like its not a BGA module), as a few folks have also seen some odd camera glitches as well. They confirmed the behavior and took logs - which the diagnostics team will review prior to getting in for a service appointment.

Related/Unrelated, they confirmed the odd GPU coil whine like noise that started after getting the truck back from its last round of service whist driving the Truck (describing it as being similar to a deer whistle noise - which our 2 year old can certainly relate to, as he hates it). They also replaced the A Pillar piano black trim, as it had come loose, and was causing crazy cross wind noise - all in seems like another week in a loner is in our future.

Just got the debrief from the mobile service visit:

1. Issues Rivian Has Addressed
  • Live-View Glitch Investigation (Initial Findings)
    • Engineering has identified that on-board caching and memory appear to be “bogged down” by the continuous camera feed, leading to momentary video glitches during live monitoring.
  • Wind Noise at A-Pillar
    • Rivian's service visit included an A-pillar adjustment that significantly reduced the door-frame wind noise.
    • The mounts for the A-pillar appliqué were bent during previous service, and so were bent back into place.

2. Issues Still Outstanding
  • Missing Gear Guard Recordings
    • Intermittent failures to record certain camera views while parked remain unexplained.
  • Camera-Blending on Incident Recordings
    • Incident-mode videos are inadvertently merging multiple camera feeds into one clip; root cause not yet identified.
  • Scope Across Fleet
    • It is unclear whether these issues are unique to this vehicle or are occurring more broadly in Gen 2 trucks.
  • “Deer-Whistle” Electronic Noise
    • The high-pitched whistling sound reported has not yet been resolved, but confirmed by Rivian Mobile service to be unacceptable and will require service visit to determine cause and fix.

3. Rivian’s Current Explanation
  • Primary Hypothesis:
    • Engineering believes that temporary video storage(caching) for the live-view cameras is consuming system memory in a way that causes:
      • Glitching during live monitoring, and potentially
      • Broader recording failures (missing clips or blended feeds).
  • Investigation Status:
    • They are exploring whether all reported issues (live-view glitching, missing clips, feed blending) share this single root cause, but have no firm timeframe yet.
  • Fleet Impact:
    • To date, this is the first occurrence frontline service in STL has seen; they will check if other vehicles exhibit the same symptoms.

Quick update - following review by engineering- the trucks going in for service again 😮💨 They want to look at the AXM to try and see why the cameras are blending.
