Somehow Tesla got their Shanghai factory built in 168 days. That seems shady.

Middle of the d*** sticks and the video has to start out with "No Rivian" signs. People will do anything to oppose progress. Thing I've learned after 40+ years in Northern Virginia, eventually somebody is going to develop every single square inch of space around you. All you can hope for is the lesser of two evils. We could have had a Disney World here some years back, instead people opposed it and we got 9823475938457 houses, instead. Now they're putting in data centers and people oppose those - would you prefer 9834579385893475 more people and houses? We're already sitting in one of the most infuriating traffic-congested regions of the country.

Just in my little city alone, the corrupt city manager has pushed through waivers for all his developer buddies to pave over 90% of all green space to put more housing.

Point is, lesser of two evils. I'd rather have a factory that provides jobs than a gazillion more people. ? #shrug

My MBA class did a trip to Beijing + Shanghai back in 2008. One of the places we visited was the planning center for the upcoming World Fair. I forget the exact timing, but I want to say the fair was less than a year away and they were just starting to do demolition work for pre-construction.

What had previously been at this site? Residences for 50,000 people. They up and told 50,000 people to move on just a couple months notice. They apparently provided "new and better" houses to everyone, and "zero people complained".

There's a reason things can get built incredibly quick in China.

I know there's generally broad bi-partisan agreement to make planning take less time and money in this country (aka permitting reform). But I don't think anyone would be onboard with going full China.

In China, where you have no environmental regulations/enforcement, the earthwork phase of the project can move very quickly.

My estimate of 2+ years is based on the following from this point as seen in the video:
- 9 months to get all buildings under roof
- 9 - 12 months to do interior build out
- 6 months to a production line up and running and ship forst customer vehicle

I hope I am wrong and they get it done quicker.

Half is being built first, then the second half. So 200k capacity will hopefully be ready sooner

Love it or hate it, you gotta admire the beauty of that red clay. One of the few things I miss about living in the South, such good soil.

No one is saying go full Chinese but when environmental assessments can take years then things get ridiculous and we can save time and get infrastructure built better, faster and cheaper.
