I have Nationwide auto insurance from Rivian and last week got a voicemail from 1.855.573.7348 “We are calling regarding your auto insurance policy with nationwide insurance You may contact any of our renewal specialist at 8 5 5- 5 7 3- 7 3 4 8. Please have your policy number available when you call. Your response is time sensitive so please return this call at your earliest convenience thank you…”
I actually called them back and hung up after someone in the other line answered and started asking my policy number when I realized what if it’s phishing?
I called the number from my Nationwide app which is Rivian insurance and they acknowledge about some surveys and inquiries from Nationwide but could not help me with it nor know about the specifics. She asked me to call them back but could not guarantee of the number if it is phishing or not.
so for those who have Nationwide insurance, has anyone got a similar call and have you called them back?
Today, I got a call again and actually answered it but it was only a recording, the same voice from the voicemail last week.

Spam call. If you have questions for your Insurance company or Nationwide, call their numbers they have listed on their sites or insurance documentation.

Never return a call to the number provided on an unsolicited call. Ever.

If you are concerned that this is real, look at your existing paperwork for the account (your insurance ID card in this case) and call that number to ask about the call.

last week, I got a call from the fraud department at my bank - I’m 99.999% sure it was them - but as soon as he asked for my authentication info, I said I would need to call him back on the number on my debit card or somewhere on the bank’s web site that he could direct me to.

It’s disappointing that so many companies place outgoing calls like this, which just prime their customers to respond to scam calls instead of ignoring them. Heck, I got a text from someone at Rivian that said “wire your vehicle payment to this account”. “Uhm no. You need to put those instructions on Rivian.com!” (eventually, that did happen)

Some months ago I kept getting these calls. Reached out to Rivian Nationwide specialist and they advised me that it isn't spam or to upsell. Nationwide has contracted an outside entity to verify if [expected] annual mileage on policies are accurate. You should reach out to the number listed in your Nationwide account if you're not sure if the calls are legit. Or, simply return the call but do not provide personal info if asked. If it's legit Nationwide, they have your sensitive info already and will not ask for it.

See thread I created back then: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/robocalls-from-nationwide-regarding-renewal.26658/

I did call Nationwide and then routed me to Rivian insurance since they have my number on file. The lady on the other line could not help me but was aware of the calls being made and suggested to call back that number.
When I called that number, they asked for my policy number and that was when I hung up the phone because I didn’t like the idea of getting asked of personal information.

"Your response is time sensitive"

Red flag for me that something is amiss

If you checked your app or verified by calling the main number and they didn’t have anything to talk to you about, I would forget it (And not answer/call back for this again).

The best way to avoid Phishing and SPAM is to never click on links in emails/ texts and never answer calls from unknown numbers. If there is something in those communications you are curious or worried about, verify by contacting by a known good number or checking your app/ online account. If it’s that important it will appear there too.

You did the right thing.

If it's important they can send an email. I don't answer unknown numbers or call them back.

They ask for full policy number or only part of it to confirm they are speaking to the right person? I don't recall which was asked of me. But, no matter, with policy number alone a scammer doesn't have enough to do much. If you are worried, change your Nationwide account password ASAP. The other thread I linked, and the contributors within it, spells out pretty clearly what the call is for... and is not a scam.
