Has anyone tried running open pilot without a comma on R1T?

Hey all,

I'm just curious if anyone has ran open pilot on a laptop or with flowpilot on R1T.

Looks like it'd be much cheaper to pick up a red panda, webcam and the adapter then a whole comma 3x.

Thx in advance

Yes, it’s been done. Seems like a dumb idea for the relatively low cost/benefit equation. Jump into the Discord if you want more info however.

It's like $200 to get up and running with a red panda and an R1T harness no? vs 999.

Longitudinal control becomes an issue that way.

Add in the cost of the base hardware to run OpenPilot, plus your hours and hours of time to get it up and running, vice $999 and 30 min.

Seems about right plus a laptop and camera. Like I said, sounds terrible for the small cost difference.
You don't have a laptop? Flowpilot runs on a cell phone.

700 savings seems substantial to me

Might take hours if you don't do software normally I suppose. I'm confident it wouldn't take long with a laptop or cell phone with flow pilot. $700 in savings seems pretty good to me

It all depends on what you're willing to spend. The ~$700 was well worth my time, much cleaner install, the warranty, and access to support.

Lukas and others have been working on version 2 of the Comma Zero (https://discord.com/channels/469524606043160576/1365421072991653960), which is basically the setup you describe as a low-cost intro to Openpilot. It's not something I'd want to use long-term, and if you're just going to end up getting a 3X eventually anyway the cost difference between just getting the 3X off the bat makes it an even less attractive option in my opinion.

Still, if you just want a cheap way to play around with Openpilot, this is one way to do it. To me it's more of a developer toy, rather than a consumer-friendly solution. If using Openpilot for ADAS is something you seriously want to use on your Rivian, I'd just get the 3X.

This is way more trouble than it's worth. For example, lack of driver monitoring camera means falling back to DM wheeltouch, so no hands-free. Why bother?

Idk if I'd use it hands free tbh. Maybe eventually.. I wonder if I could use my old z flip for can and monitoring. Will have to investigate
