So, I've got a Rooftop Tent being delivered this week. I've got two sets of cross bars, with plans to sometimes run the tent over the bed and other times over the cab. There will be times I want to keep the over bed space available for bikes.

So I have the tent, I have the bike racks, and I have the gear guard cables. What I need is everything else. I plan to go with 1-2 other people on 1-2 day trips. So I need a table, some chairs, a toilet, a privacy tent to change in, a shower, etc... I want stuff that will fit in the gear tunnel, the frunk and under the power tonneau.

So far on my list I have:
  • Table (leaning towards Lifetime 4 foot table from Home Depot, but open to others)
  • Camp chairs
  • Awning (do I want an EZ Up? A shade sail and some ropes? Something attached to the crossbars?)
  • Cooking appliance (thinking about a 22" Blackstone with Stand, but would I rather have the Rivian kitchen? Or something else?)
  • Toilet - what toilet do you guys recommend? Something that is as friendly to a wife who likes creature comforts.
  • It seems like the Husky bins have a clear top and fit under the tonneau cover, so I'll likely want to leverage those.
  • Powered cooler or fridge...something to keep meat, eggs, etc... from going bad. What do you recommend and where does it go?
  • Soft shackles, a hitch recovery point, tow strap, recovery boards, etc...
Please help complete my list of what I need to have an enjoyable day or two overlanding.
I humbly recommend the Thunderbolt Adventure Supply Overland Kitchen with Gear Sled for a premium cooking experience. Super quick set up and clean up. In addition, it's much easier to access all of that gear you're planning to put in the bed with our Bed Glider - especially with the Rooftop Tent mounted over the bed.

Here's our truck with the tent open, Kitchen out and the Bed Glider pulled out to access our fridge (Dometic CSX35) which also fits under the tonneau.

I would consider a canopy, instead of an awning. Most awnings are quite expensive. They attach to the truck, which limits where you can sit to take advantage of the shade. They may also not be deployable, if space around the truck is limited. And, what if you need to move your truck, after you have set up that awning 😡 A canopy is cheaper and can be set up anywhere, in minutes. I bought a Crown Shades 8’x8’ awning off Amazon for less than $150. I can easily set this awning up, by myself, in barely a minute - seriously, it’s crazy simple and quick. I have only used it twice now, but it has been awesome! On both of these occasions, a truck attached awning would have been completely useless. Can’t attest to the durability of the Crown Shades awning, but, if it last a couple of years, it will have been worth it, at that price.
Walmart has a cheap canopy under $100 and sidewalls ($50) with 3 mesh and 1 solid wall. I use it sometimes but looking to get an awning instead.

Definitely the cleanest solve, and top notch gear. Unfortunately $3800 is about 4x more than I'm willing to spend on a setup like this. Maybe if I ever get around to it I'll try my own DIY solution... wish I could afford this one though, such a perfect combination!

Looks like the Bouge 23 quart is 12.97 inches high. Any idea what the max height for fitting in the frunk would be, or in the upper part of it?

Looks like there was another similar thread, but nothing conclusive: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/frunk-dimensions-for-mobile-fridge.4958/
Here’s a few pics of the BougeRV in the frunk. I use it all the time when we go grocery shopping. Don’t recommend it staying in the frunk for long periods of time during the summer months because it gets hot in there and makes the compressor work harder to keep the fridge cool. During long road trips starting late Spring through early Fall, I stick it in the cab behind the passenger seat or in the bed of the truck. FYI…I have the 12V in the frunk.

Which BougeRV model is this? Also, how long have you had it? Any issues with it so far?
I didn’t answer all your questions before. It’s a 23 quart fridge or freezer. I’ve had it for 2 years now. Wish it was a little bigger, but then it wouldn’t fit in the frunk. With the current size, I’d have to unbox the frozen pizzas to fit it in there. Only issues I’ve had was it trying to keep things cool when it was in a super hot frunk, but I’ve learned to just move it somewhere else in the truck. It’s portable enough that I just bring it in the house full of groceries to unload. It’s also great that I can preload it in the house for a trip and just bring it out and plug it in.

I'm a fan of the iceco fridges, I have two of the aluminum ones, one 35 for the bed of the R1T and a 20 for the Frunk (I did the 12v instal myself....) and the 20 gets pretty much daily usage.

I have an awning from Ironman 4x4 which is pretty awesome, and also the thunderbolt supply camp kitchen.

as for the toilet I got one of those $40 things from Amazon and its actually pretty good.

I usually have my mountain bike in the truck bed, so using the tonneau is not an option. While I could put the fridge in the bed (w/no tonneau), the Dometic usually lives in the back seat area. I don’t want it sitting out exposed to whatever 🐻 I just fold one seat, lay down a piece of plywood, set the fridge on top, run the power cord into the gear tunnel, where I can hook it up to my EcoFlow or the truck. I usually use the EcoFlow to conserve the truck battery (don’t have to leave the outlets on full time). Gear tunnel is for folding chairs, table, canopy, hiking poles, EcoFlow, etc. Frunk is for my Solo Stove Fire Pit, plastic boxes for all my cooking stuff and misc. junk. Well, you get the idea. I think I pack pretty much like MountainBikeDude.
I'm planning to have the RTT over the bed when not carrying bikes, but when carrying bikes I will put the RTT over the cab and use another set of crossbars to house my bikes over the bed. In either scenario, I still have full bed access. That's my plan, as of this moment.

FWIW I had the same "tent over the bed sometimes and the cab other times" dream and I think it would be a hassle in practice. I install my tent with a hoist and leaving the crossbars mounted to the tent makes it super easy. But the roof mounting brackets are narrower than the bed points (and I think differently spaced) - you'd have to redo the tent fixing to the crossbars every time you switch, which seems like a huge hassle.

I just got a hitch rack with a swingout for the bikes when I have the tent mounted. If you get the 1UP rack you can add/remove trays as needed so you don't have a bunch of wasted space - I bought the bed racks and then a hitch adapter so I can choose between over-bed, over-roof, or hitch-mounted.

Mileage may vary, but I see a lot of awnings on rigs and almost never see them deployed... maybe because I'm in the northwest. I almost bought one several times but this is one where I'd give it a go without it for a while and see if you really miss it. It's a lot of drag and weight and cost to carry around. (I suspect most people would prefer a freestanding canopy if you really want a rain/sun cover).

IceCo 20 is great because it fits in the frunk, but be warned that it will struggle to keep up in direct summer heat (85+ degrees) - the frunk just gets too hot. The smaller Dometic CFX units fit in the bed with the tonneau closed - or anything under 17" tall.

After much consideration I decided that the only toilet that was wife-friendly was a 20' Airstream 🤣

Thanks for the thoughts. I have a Kuat Pivot that will swing the rack out, and I have a 1UP USA hitch rack (have had for 15 years). I just really prefer not using the hitch mount on the truck for camping if I can get away from it.

You are correct that the spacing on the cross bars is different. I'm going to evaluate it today, and hopefully come up with a solution that will allow for minimal effort in moving between the two locations. The tent is being delivered tomorrow, and the hoist I plan to use to suck it up to the ceiling of the garage is on the porch as of about an hour ago. If I have to choose between one location or the other, I suspect I'll choose over the cab because the only real downside is minimal hit to range and it preserves the over bed functionality which I care about when taking bikes. I'll let you know how I get on.

I’ve got a great toilet, privacy tent for toilet, some WAG bags and an adjustable height fold up table coming. Going to get some bins tomorrow. I’ve got a big jug for water, plenty of coolers and while I don’t have proper stuff to cook yet, I’ve got plans for food I can bring and eat without heating or anything. I’m thinking Saturday or Sunday night I may take a maiden voyage in the mountains near my house (I’m 10 minutes from a National Forest) as a trial run.

As for the fridge, they are a game changer versus an ice chest. I have a Dometic and love it, but it is barely too tall to fit under a tonneau. The Iceco may be the ticket.
We have the dometic CFX3. It fits fine under the tonneau . We have a gen 1 T if it makes a difference. We've had it a couple of years and have been happy with it. I haven't price shopped against other options. Spendy ..I'm sure we used rewards points at REI.

My Dometic is a CFX 40, I believe. It is just a wee bit too tall to clear the tonneau.

I wanted the biggest possible cooler that was dual zone that fit under the Tonneau cover and of course did not want to spend a fortune. We got a Bodega 53 qt. It is 18 inches tall. I have to open the cover slide it in and then close the cover over it. IT will not slide in past the back stiff edge piece. IT does fit with our cover. We have the evsportline tonneau cover. We have had it a couple years and works great. The only time it did not keep temp in the freezer side was when it was 95 and the sun shining right on it. Model T50. IT is about $240 on Amazon right now.

I went with the ICECO APL35, in black (also avail. in silver). I have a Gen2 R1T (with the 'new' version 2 powered tonneau cover... so yours may be slightly different) and also have the Thunderbolt Adventure Supply bed slider mentioned above by the sponsor. The APL35 (without an available extra insulated cover!) just barely fits under the tonneau cover sitting on the slider. So close in fact that it rubs ever so slightly against the rubber seal on the rear of the tonneau cover when being slid in or out on the bed glider. Once slid under the cover, it leaves just enough room (1/4-3/8") to slide a thin piece of foam insulation on the top of the cooler to separate it from the black metal tonneau cover. The Dual Zone APL35 lets me keep ice separate which was a big draw for me. For camping and travel I run the fridge off a Jackery 1000 V2 cinched down on the bed glider behind the cooler, and which in turn can be backed up by the R1T 120 outlet.
I also have a RTT attached to Rivian bed rails and suspended from the garage ceiling with a powered hoist which makes for easy attachment (over bed - not cab) and removal as a unit.
