Hi there. I have had my R1S since 12/31 at 4:30pm. I have a pair of Tesla wall chargers and I am using a TeslaTap adapter to charge. Before the R1S I drove a Model S for 7 years and I am still adapting to the differences. My question is what do you do before pulling the charge cable out of the R1S? On the Tesla cable there is a button. When charging a Tesla, you push the button and the light around the charger socket changes and you remove the cable. I think it is actually locked in place until the light changes. Now that we can pre-condition when I go out to the R1S in the morning it could still be charging or drawing power. What do I before pulling out the adapter + Tesla cable? Do I need to stop the charging on the app or in the car before pulling the plug? What do others with Tesla chargers do?

While waiting for a reply I decided to review the Owner's Manual on the app. If the light around the cable is solid green (not pulsating) then it is done charging and not drawing any current and therefore it is safe to pull the cable. If it is pulsating, it is charging and I should stop the charging on the app or in the car before pulling the plug. Is that correct?

I just unplug it from the truck whenever. It doesn’t seem to cause an issue and it obviously stops charging when I unplug it. It doesn’t seem to have a separate lock like Teslas do that keeps the cord locked in.

I did notice that there was not a lock on the charger (when the truck is unlocked). I feel a bit uncomfortable pulling out a cable that has 240V and 48 amps flowing through it. But I presume that Rivian has thought about that. There is a probably a switch or something that triggers the charging to stop when the cable is only partially removed but not electrically disconnected.

Does anyone know if the button on the Tesla cable does anything when it is charging? Does the button communicate with the charger or the car I wonder. I will test it tonight when I get home and plug in. It would be really nice if you could push the button to stop the charging.

The proper way to stop it is one of the following two methods:

1) if actively charging press on the unlock latch of the TeslaTap and wait for the charge port light to turn white. Then you can safely pull out the TeslaTap.

2) either via app or via infotainment screen you can stop the charging session and then safely unplug the TeslaTap.

How are you enjoying your R1S so far? I have had a couple Teslas myself.

Makes total sense that the latch on the TeslaTap would stop the charging. I will try that out tonight as well.
Yes, I very much like the R1S. It is definitely different than the Model S. But I think that is mostly the difference between a low sedan and a bigger SUV. I have a non-performance dual motor and it is definitely not as fast as my S 100D. The R1S will definitely get up and move but you really need to mash the pedal to make that happen. The Model S (and Model Y) seem to have a very linear acceleration to pedal position. You need to depress the pedal quite far on the R1S before you start to feel the back of the seat. I also definitely feel a slight hesitation before it accelerates. Almost like an ICE car down shifting. Maybe it is the rear motors kicking in. But those are small complaints compared to the other advantages that an adventure vehicle brings. Went skiing last weekend and it was 1 degree F. Worked like a champ. So nice to turn on the heat before you start the last run of the day and have a nicely warmed car when you get back to it.

I have a quad motor, so my acceleration is different than yours, but are you feeling that sensation in sport as well?

My father in-law is in the market and he's considering an R1S dual non-performance. I mean 4.5 seconds to 60 will still be his fastest car ever lol.

Dual non-performance only has All-purpose, Snow and Off Road modes. No sport mode. It is still plenty fast. Just not the same acceleration as I am used to. Maybe an OTA upgrade to Performance mode someday in the future.

Just push down on the locking lever on the J1772 plug - charging will stop and the ring will turn white. Then you can pull the plug out.

I've had issues DC fast charging just unplugging. To where I had to do a reset. Scared me enough that nowadays I always press stop on the screen first then unplug.

Yes it does lock the charge plug in the socket when the vehicle doors are locked.

I don’t believe there is any danger to user to plug it out while charging like any wall plug. It is well insulated.
I can’t say much if there could be issues to vehicle’s system however.

I have the same setup with an R1S Quad and Tesla Model Y with a Tesla Wall charger. I use the TeslaTap adapter and had the same question about when to pull the cable. As others have stated it’s best to stop charging first and then unlock and pull. I have not tried unlocking the TeslaTap and waiting for charging to stop but will try that. I just make sure charging is stopped by ensuring the lights are not blinking and double checking the app.

I did a test last night when I plugged in. When the car is charging, green light is pulsating, you can press either the button on the Tesla cable or press down on the latch of the TeslaTap adapter then wait a few seconds and the light around the charge port will turn white. You can then remove the cable. There is no real reason to use the Tesla button so I will just press the TeslaTap lever, wait a few seconds, and pull out the cable and adapter. Thanks for the help with this.
