Hi everyone,
I am new to the EV world. I was notified by my guide I just received a vin and want to get my home charger installed. I understand the Rivian charger gets a max of 25 miles per hour of charging. Are there any chargers out there that charge faster or is that the best out there?
Thanks

In case of home charging, the charger is actually in the car. "Charger" that you install in your garage is just a power supply. Rivian onboard charger can only accept 48 amps, regardless how powerful the power supply is. Their wall unit is also rated to up to 48 amps as many other "chargers" out there.

TL;DR; no, there is no way to charge faster than 48 amps (~25 miles per hour) with Rivian on level 2

No, there is no home charger that will charge your Rivian faster. Some may be cheaper, some have different features, but all that have a J1772 plug will be compatible.

Best Rivian vehicles can do is 25 miles an hour, 11kw. Keep in mind, that is with the 21 inch wheels and tires, the most efficient wheels and tires. My 20" ATs charge at 22 miles an hour. I usually add about 100 miles at a time when at home, so I only charge for 4-5 hours.

Other vehicles can charge up to 19kw on home setups, but also if you were to get one of those vehicles, it would also be more expensive to install the power supply into your home electric system in order to handle 19kw.

So if you want charge more miles/hr, then leave it in conserve mode until you’re done charging, then switch back to sport mode after ??

How many kilometers (miles for you Imperial lackeys) do you drive on a daily basis? Since I only drive 50 kilometers routinely, I don't even need a level 2 charger. I just plug the portable charger into a 120 volt socket. I haven't bothered to get my wall charger installed. Your electricity supplier and rate tiers may also influence your charging schedule and if you want to install a home level 2 charger (240 volt)

In general, charge every day to 70% at 120 or 240 volt (US), and use DCFC on road trips. The algorithm you'll settle into is different from internal combustion powered vehicles where you wait until some arbitrary low level of fullness to fill the tank completely.

Have fun, and you'll love your R1S.

I would rather measure distance in "bowls of soup" than a make believe "kilometer".

I recommend to anyone who needs a Level 2 for their home to get the new Tesla universal wall charger. It’s a great price, has both NACS and CCS so will work on nearly any EV and be future proofed when everything goes to NACS, and can power share with more chargers if you want to add more in the future.

I have the Rivian one and the cable is so bulky compared to the Tesla ones; if I hadn’t gotten this one so cheap I would’ve returned it and gotten a Tesla one. I’m not aware these can power share at all either. I really don’t see the benefit of it being wifi connected at all either.

I think that a thicker stronger cord is better. Tesla EVSE is cheaper though.

You can install any charger capable of 48 amps and you will get max charge rate. As someone else pointed out they are technically EVSE (Electric Vehicle Service Equipment) as the actual charger is onboard the truck. Most here... Myself included though... still refer to them as chargers even though its not the correct term.

I have the Tesla wall connector. I have two and i chose them for two reasons:

1) I already had an existing Tesla charger
2) I wanted to do power share between the two. They share 60 amps total power.

So the Rivian charger is fine but some of us choose other options because they have features or functionality that we're looking for specifically.

Bang for the buck, Tesla EVSEs. Very durable, and everything in the future will be NACS anyway.

So not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I have a bourgerv charger 48 amps, i used to use my Audi charger on the Rivian, but that was somewhere around 32-40 amps, so I was getting 7kwh, with the 48 amp I'm expecting 11kwh, the rivian down grades the amps from 48 to 29 and charges at 7kwh, anyone else see this?

I don't work anymore so why am I so busy?

I just went through all of this. Now that you have the charging speed info, the next question will be what home charging system is best for you. The Rivian charger (and others) will be permanently installed and hard wired into your breaker box. This is the best and most expensive option. You can order one of many other chargers online for less (search Amazon for examples) and most of these will plug into a dryer type 220 receptacle which will be hard wired into your breaker box. Not a bad option. Or you can get a dryer type receptacle that fits the 220 plug that comes with your Rivian and this receptacle will be hard wired into your box. This also requires plugging in and out many times, probably not the best option since these receptacles were not meant for daily connects/disconnects, just think of how many times you have unplugged your dryer at home. Or if you want to charge at a snails pace (about 2 miles/hr) then use the 110 supplied. I did this for a couple of weeks while waiting for the electrician. I am sure there are other options but in a nutshell this is what I found. I went with the Rivian charger but they won't sell you one until you get your vehicle.

As I tell my European coworkers....."Here in the states, we call the imperial measurements....FREEDOM units"

We bought a Lectron 32a J1772 charger when we bought our RAV4 Prime. It is a work horse and we just plug the R1T in at night and charge it for about 6 hours (midnight to 6) and we get about 100 miles or so. We have a dedicated 240v 14-50 outlet.
