If you really need that range in subfreezing temps, you are better off with a dual motor large/max pack, for that safety margin. You really don't want to be forced to do FWD conserve mode to eek out the range in snow. Also take in to account the very long charging times to refillthat large battery, likely will take double the time of your Tesla (not due to charging rate) due to the lower efficiency (and hence more charging needed to refill overnight).

Have over 30K miles in our Rivians (7.5K R1T and approaching 24K in 2023 R1S Quad). In all those miles and across the two, I’ve only ever been to the SC for minor panel alignments, a windshield replacement and standard 22.5K mile service. All of those could have waited and none were urgent. So the 5 hours to an SC gives me a bit of pause, but I’d lean towards yes if you are ok planning ahead to make that trip 1X per year. Maybe tie it in with another reason you’re going that way if possible.

Just checked. July is my most expensive month. ACs run nonstop. And now we have Evs. Used 4,222 kWh. Bill was $655
Here in NY at $0.25/kWh your bill would have been $1,055 o_O

Yup. This summer was brutal. My highest bill ever in this house (8yrs) was about $480. Luckily AZ electricity prices are still manageable (.14/kwh) in the summer. I’m going to look into solar with a power wall to power just my vehicles and maybe some AC

Ugh I'd take that pricing. If we get anywhere near 2000 kWh, it's $1000.

Hi
I currently own a model Y with 142,000 miles on it. I commute daily 180 miles, mainly in highways. I live in upper NY where it snows and there can be snow squalls when driving in the winter, highway maintenance crews can't keep up with the 1-2 feet of snow falling rapidly. My Y works but I run in to range issues in the winter. Also I am looking for a Musk alternative. I am on the wait list for R2, so another 2 years before I get my hands on it.

We do not have a local service center, nearest one is 5 hours away. How reliable are the R1Ss? I see so many negative comments and people selling their R1S due to poor construction and support.

Please be honest. Would you recommend a used R1S 2023 for my purpose? Range [need 225 miles on a single charge at temps in the low 10s], reliability and support if needed.

Thanks.
The Gen2 Rivians, 2025 and beyond, added a heat pump, which would be a good thing for cold weather range.

Where in NY do you live where the closest SC is 5 hours away? There are several unpublished locations that may be closer. You don't need to go to Brooklyn if that's what you're thinking.

We love our R1S Quad, easily the best and most fun vehicle we've owned. Longer drives seem to go by much faster. We've had it 16 months so out of the honeymoon phase. Mobile service for minor work and tire rotations. If it's dead they'll tow it and provide a loaner, but you still need to pick-up. We had one SC trip for the 12v battery.

As others have suggested, get a used R1S Quad (Gen 1). A lot of the issues will be worked out or at least well known. 20" wheels will give you more choices for tires. 180 miles round trip isn't a stretch in the cold from a full charge. Maybe mountains UP both ways it might be tight.

If you MUST have EV it's a great choice. Hopefully you can get some KW at work or have solar to keep your electric costs down.

I think I would be looking into a Cadillac Lyriq or a Chevy Trailblazer EV.

I dont have any idea what their cold range is, but I would bet you have a GM dealer closer than 5 hours away.

Trialblazer range is 283-324 depending on spec
Lyriq range is 307-314 depending on spec

For the price you would be paying for a used Rivian, you could buy either one of these new, and have money left over.

He’s going to commute 180 miles a day. So about 50,000 miles a year. He will 100% need a SC more than once a year….

For such a long commute you not be able to completely recharge at home every day.
Are there DC quick chargers that you could use on your route if needed?

I hate my electric bill... but at 2815 kWh, my bill was $395. I guess I hate it a bit less now!

I average 90-103 kWh a day!

Maybe with a 48-amp 240-V charger, which would require hardwiring on a 60-amp circuit.

48 amps x 240 volts = 11.5 kW.

11.5 kW x 8 hours = 92 kWh from each quick overnight.

Maybe 184 miles/night if winter efficiency is 2 miles/kWh.

A 50-amp circuit should support a 40-amp charger, 9.6 kW. That would require 10 hours to deliver 96 kWh.

Extra battery capacity may well be worth the extra money, @Dmroc.

Also, research winter traction options. I'll probably use 3PMSF winter tires on all four, plus Spikes-Spiders on rear wheels. Be careful to keep suspension on High when using any space-occupying winter traction.

Very best wishes!

I don't believe the R1S will meet your use case.

Service - The local service center is 5 hours away and that's too far away in my personal opinion.

Range - The 180 miles I think it doable (90 miles each way), but I'd highly recommend trying to get charging at work to make that a bit easier. The 225 miles isn't doable. I have to charge to 95% or so on my R1T to do 219 miles (sometimes 100% and sometimes 90% depending on the weather). But, that I only have to do once or twice a month.

How fast are you driving in this case?
