If your typical highway speed is 70-75, I think a Gen 1 Large Pack would be enough range. Sure, a max pack would be better, but enough. For example, this...

As for the distance, I have a Quad motor Large R1T, supposedly 270-280 miles of range, on 20" AT tires. The other tires can get around 10% more range.

My best range that I got was around 250 miles, on a couple mild days with temps 70s-80s. I left my house, and got home with around 30-40 miles of range estimated left (drive was about 110 miles each way). Driving was some freeway, some 45mph roads. I did the same drive, same route (or close enough) when it was 13F out, and it took 50% of my battery to go 110 miles, so a total range of about 220 miles.
Like you said, with 33" efficient tires on there we add 10% and get well into OP's targets. S/he could probably daily charge to 85% safely and 90-95% in the winter. And that's without having to slow down at all.

I'll say this though, Gen 1 R1S is a bit of a bouncy ride, and you probably need to be ok with that to daily drive one. Does not apply to R1T or Gen 2 R1S.

My post was basically not recommending a Large pack for the OP, based on their needs, as quoted below. The worst case I had was 220 miles, which might get to 240 miles with more efficient tires, which also are not rated for snow, which you probably want in that region of New York. I also laughed when I read you think adding 10%, for a range of 240 miles, is "well into OP's targets", a target of 225 miles in the original post, a whole 15 miles of extra range. In my worst case experience, a good deal of my driving was at or below 55 mph, the OP will be driving more freeway (>65 mph). They could definitely do the drive if they stop to charge, but I wouldn't want to stop to charge for a daily commute either.

250 miles with a single charge when temp is under/around 10 degrees.
Thanks Rob. Not a numbers guy. I dont mind extra electricity bill, just need a reliable car, with high ground clearance and decent miles in the winter, where I do not have to drive 65/mph or less to save the battery for the 180 mile trip.
When I go too my brothers house, its 242 miles round trip for me to my brothers house, mostly freeway, 65mph-75mph. I always have to stop to charge.

Hi
I currently own a model Y with 142,000 miles on it. I commute daily 180 miles, mainly in highways. I live in upper NY where it snows and there can be snow squalls when driving in the winter, highway maintenance crews can't keep up with the 1-2 feet of snow falling rapidly. My Y works but I run in to range issues in the winter. Also I am looking for a Musk alternative. I am on the wait list for R2, so another 2 years before I get my hands on it.

We do not have a local service center, nearest one is 5 hours away. How reliable are the R1Ss? I see so many negative comments and people selling their R1S due to poor construction and support.

Please be honest. Would you recommend a used R1S 2023 for my purpose? Range [need 225 miles on a single charge at temps in the low 10s], reliability and support if needed.

Thanks.
Got mine in March 2024 absolutely love it !!!

I switched from a YLR to a 1st gen QM last December. We're in Colorado, and I drive to Leadville year round, where < 0F is common at night. I did this with the Y, and now I'm doing it with the R1S. Without doubt, the R1S has better range on a full charge than the YLR did, and you can trust the range values a lot more. I put winter tires on both - the R1S is also without doubt better in the snow / ice. Even with winter tires, the Y felt a bit squirrelly. I drive both like I stole them, they're both fun, but being able to get off pavement in the R1 opens up trails in the mountains I'd never have dared try. I've had one service issue so far - a wire came loose in the door, so the door handle didn't 'pop out' automatically. Mobile service fixed for me. Sounds like the service distance is the biggest thing you have to decide about, but vehicle wise - the R1S is superior in almost every way for me. I also dislike Musk, so not driving a vehicle associated with him is a nice perk.

Thank you for the nice response. I tried looking at used Gen 1 R1S. But getting confused about which one to buy. Because some advertisements talk about battery but not range. I am not sure Quad motor has different batteries with different ranges???

Suggestions appreciated.

I wouldn’t but ANY vehicle that far from service.
Chris. There is a SC very close to where I live, they opened it recently. So, this gives me comfort. Except still R1S and R1T are big for my needs. Still very tempted.

Sorry, R1T owner here but I'll give you my $0.02 about reliability.

1) IF things go south, users are more eager to go and post online. So the percentage of users who have issues in a forum will be higher than in real life.

2) Issues are real. Rivian's issues by % is higher than other brands for obvious reasons.

3) #2 is precisely the reason why I opted for a used unit (R1T Quad Large with 4800 mi on it). I figured that some of the issues straight from the factory already happened and were corrected. I've experienced a few that I was OK with (PTC Not working, FM Radio not working -yeah, I listen to FM!- , my 12V batteries died overnight, I got a couple of RSB performed such as the half-shaft and A/C Compressor vibration, and more recently I found water under my rear carpets after a touchless carwash)

4) If you go this route and get that 2023 R1S AND you're prepared for small quirks, you should be fine.

that's my honest opinion :)
Agree. R1T launch edition owner. No significant issues this far. Very pleased. Sometimes I wonder if I’m one of the lucky ones?

I’m Launch Edition owner with a 3k VIN and I haven’t had any major issues. Minor issues can be remedied at yearly checkups like any vehicle.

I am so confused about all the editions and battery packs. I am looking for the battery that will give me the highest mileage. And I dont know how to read the different options for sale.. :(

We didn't have all the battery options that you have now. I think mine's a 'large', which, with 21 inch tires quotes me 305 miles on the dash. My YLR was a little more than that from memory, but the R1 gets further for me, with the same driving style (heavy foot), route, weather etc.

That's an understandable perspective, but here's mine. A, OP said their commute is 180 miles, so they're targeting a range of 225 in cold weather to give a wide comfort margin, so to me, 240 would be well above that. B, several people on here have said their Blizzaks get as good efficiency than the Pirelli ATs at the same size of 34", so a 33" winter tire will do even better. For example on this thread several people said that winter range on Blizzaks = 90% of summer range on ATs, so your 280 summer miles on ATs would be 250 winter miles on Blizzaks. And again those are 34", so 33" would only be better.

None of this is a guarantee, but I just don't see the range concern. In these conditions I would be pretty surprised to get under 1.7 mi/kWh average, which works out to a highway range of 222 miles, or 180 miles on 80% battery usage. And again, OP said they can charge or slow down in a worst case scenario, they just don't want to have to do it very often.

All that said, if you can afford a Max Pack easily, then go for it, why not.
