I reserved my R2 about 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone knew how many reservations there are and how long it will take to build them all. I know I’m really really late to the game but just wondering if it’ll probably be mid to late 2027 or even 2028 before I could get my R2. Or could it by rare chance be earlier in 2027.

@franklinb - Welcome to the Forum! Nobody can tell you - there's another thread (search is your friend) regarding the number of people who placed R2 reservations, but those would only be the folks active here. We have a reservation (and I'm active), but so do my in-laws and my BIL, and they're not. Also, Rivian has said that current R1 owners get bumped up in the queue automatically.

We'll know a little bit more after March 12th when the configurator becomes available. So much depends on all of the variables, including (but definitely not limited to):
  • What drive train do people want (dual, tri, or single)?
  • To LIDAR or not to LIDAR?
  • How much of an early adopter do you want to be?
  • Pricing?
Just be patient...It will be worth the wait, no matter how long that is. We waited a little over two years for our R1S but I know there are active people in the forum who waited a lot longer than that for their LE R1T.

Thank you! I’m super excited about it but am saddened I didn’t find the reservations earlier! I’m really hoping to get a launch addition one but hope it won’t take overly to long to get it. I’ve heard some horror stories of people getting their R1s late and am hoping that now that rivian has a substantial factory set up they can get the R2s out much faster. I’ve seen a couple posts about lidars what exactly is that for?

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

I have read that there are over 200,000 reservations for the R2 as of early 2025. It’s definitely even higher now. Of course all of those reservations won’t necessarily convert to sales right away, not everyone will want a launch model for various reasons, etc. I also read that employees will get first dibs, then current Rivian owners, and then the rest of us. And finally there’s the ramp. We’re looking at 20-25K units in 2026 and then fully ramped by the end of 2027. I think 2028 might be a good guess. Who knows?

I agree I think people are overestimating how long the wait will be.

It seems like a fantastic vehicle but don’t forget how the EV market is in general.

My guess is a proportionally large number of reservation holders want it to cost $45k and it’s not going to for a long time.

That makes a lot of sense I didn’t even think about that! I’m just hoping it’ll be sooner rather than later!

Yes and a lot made reservations when there was a potential $7,500 tax credit.

I’ve seen a couple posts about lidars what exactly is that for?
Rivian plans to use LiDAR to improve self driving to Level 4. That means the R2 will be able to navigate a route without a human driver present.

For vehicles without LiDAR, Rivian will offer point to point supervised self driving.

No way to guess realistically. We don't even have final pricing, trims and range to even gauge how popular it will be. Even a wild guess today would be somewhere in 2027. March 12th might give a better idea.

I just spent sôe time with Rivian employees at the charging Outpost in Joshua Tree, CA. They’ve be been told there are 300,000 reservations! They should be teceiving their demo R2 before April 1. I’ll be there to see it! Unless they appear first closer to me in Laguna Beach or Irvine.

Nobody knows but you will likely get an opportunity to buy a no Lidar one this year and a lidar first half of next year.

How many reservations?
The company confirmed over 100k deposits in 2024 and the latest rumor mill publicly reported is 200-250. The analysts at td Cowan and UBS are modeling at a 200k reservation pool. So let’s call it 225.

Conversion Rate
Precedents from the F150 lightning was a conversion rate from initial reservation holders of less than 10%. So was the CyberTruck. The most optimistic forecast is 25% So there are likely 25k - 60k actual buyers ahead of you. Many will not want the non lidar package. Others will not want the launch drivetrain. Add it all up and you will almost certainly get a chance to buy a non lidar this year if Rivian hits its production target, and you will be on target for 1st half of 2027 for the lidar version.
