How serious is this tire damage?

I'd replace that tire. Taking a chance on it isn't worth the risk. For what it's worth, the crack would worry me more than the gouge. I had a set of tires that had very minor cracking near the lip of the rim and the tires were replaced under warranty (pro-rated) by the tire shop.

For off-road use, meh...

For on-road, I wouldn't trust my life on that tire. I've replaced ones with less damage than that. It's a ticking time-bomb and at 60mph can be catastrophic.

At 30mph or less, I wouldn't even sweat it.

The problem is that the road elements can now get to the cords in the tire and they can corrode. I would replace that tire. Not worth the risk. It may drive fine for a while and then suffer a catastrophic failure ...potentially at the worst possible time. Don't risk it.

If the tire shop saw it in person and thought it was fine, I wouldn't do anything. If anything, its in the tire shops financial interest to sell you tires. And if they said it was fine, just cosmetic, I would stop worrying. Now if the tires are loud or humming, it could be an excuse to change all four.

As long as the replacement tire is no more than 2/32 difference from other tires you are ok. Not sure what new tire depth is but it 13/32 sounds like very little wear.

Go to your local Les Schwab and have them take a look. They don't sell tires for the Rivian, so they will have zero motive to tell you it needs replacing if it doesn't. And they do free repairs when repairable. (They plugged my Rivian tire a couple months ago.)

flat tire while driving is one thing but a blowout while on the freeway at 70mph is another…it should be fixed
