Hi all,
When I used the Rivian tool to calculate insurance, the quote provided was 2-3 X of what another large company like GEICO/ Progressive is quoting. I can understanding some bundling discounts but this difference seems disproportionate

Any advantages to using Rivian insurance over the others? The website claims a faster process to get replacements/ repairs. Any special considerations?

Also one of the folks in the forum mentioned getting:
-Replacement vehicle insurance coverage and $100 deductible for windshield/Glass/Roof

Is that coverage additional or specific?

Thanks!

My ‘insurance through Rivian’ is via Nationwide. This was the only insurer I could find in Florida that would provide a policy that covered the following items that were important to me because of the apparent high repair costs and technical peculiarities of the Rivian:
OEM replacement parts;
Accelerated vehicle replacement from Rivian in event of total loss;
Full replacement coverage in event of total loss for first 3 years

First 6 mo. policy pricing was ballpark same as previous coverage on 7 year old Ridgeline (same, but without those special coverages); second 6 mo. policy was 20-25% increase ?. Note that FWIW the Nationwide Rivian coverage was not available at all to some others in my coastal central Florida area who tried to get it at the time I did for reasons unknown.

Shop around and often the company you are already bundled with is the best choice.

I use Allstate and pay an extra $12/month for the replacement vehicle guarantee. Well worth it because for me to get another Quad R1S with the AT package would cost me about $30K more than I paid last year for my '23. Don't tell Allstate...

There are no traps, except maybe the glass coverage. Every company is different, on all vehicles. I've re-quoted my insurance every 12-18 months for most of my life. It's very common for me to see a company be 3x the best price, and sometimes, even more. Progressive is insuring my Rivian at an insanely low rate, but I had offers at over 3x. Rivian's branded insurance through Nationwide was a huge pain and never really quoted me, but said they would not beat Progressive.

The glass coverage is just not worth it for most people. It was almost as much as the insurance itself. It's so high that it costs more than a new windshield every 18-24 months.

This is for six months, so only $50/mo.

Wow, I didn't know anyone could get insurance for that little. I'm fewer miles than that, and personal/pleasure. I guess I'll get a quote from Progressive tomorrow.

I'm at $160/mo including glass with State Farm.

Which company?
Progressive, which historically seems to love me, with most vehicles. They have always been the best for my motorcycles. On and off for cars. For a while they wouldn't even quote my house because of dog breed racism, but now they realized they were wrong and I also moved that insurance. Went from $2300 with AFI to $1200 with Progressive on the house.

I'll have Progressive quote my other car and house too. We had a huge wildfire here a couple years ago though, it burned 1,000 homes, so that's a big factor.

Been with USAA for decades for home, auto, etc. 10 minutes online and I had coverage.

Thanks everyone. Helpful replies.

Issues being discovered:
1. GEICO doesn’t do replacement vehicle coverage
2. I asked GEICO about OEM v/s after market and they do after market parts. GEICO is quoting me a price 1/3rd Rivian- Nationwide.
3. Have been told by someone in the know that auto insurance in California is unprofitable and most companies are actively discouraging new policies (- and hoping for rates to go up significantly).
4. Some companies (Nationwide- outside the Rivian app) state they don’t do online quotes in California.

Can California folks on this thread just mention names of companies they may have used for insurance outside of Rivian- Nationwide that provided the following:
1. Original vehicle replacement
2. Full glass coverage
3. OEM parts

Thanks!

just note that for the kinds of repair needed after an accident there really isn't anything other than OEM for 99% of the parts so rather a moot point. Sadly this may lead to longer wait times; certainly happened in my case last year when the Rivian certifies collision center was at the mercy of Normal to get needed parts.

FWIW we have 7 vehicles insured for two drivers and the 2022 R1S coverage is 10% higher than the next highest, a 2024 Grenadier.
