Hello folks. I'm a long term EV driver starting with the Tesla Roadster in 2009, so 17 years of driving EVs as my main vehicle. As an early adopter, I started blogging about the experience (completely unpaid) to encourage EV adoption. I was active for a while on the Tesla forums as 'owner' so my name here is also 'owner'. My very inactive blog is teslaowner.wordpress.com. I'm keeping my 2013 Tesla Model S as kind of a daily driver till I find a small EV to replace it.

My new R1S is a unicorn. I ended up replacing a PeaceVans full camper van with the R1S, which is a long story in itself. I was quite surprised that no one has bought a R1S with the same specs before. It is a Rivian Blue Tri Ocean Coast with the All Terrain Package. There are some epic roads I want to do some exploring on that the van was simply not capable of, so I figured why not a Tri and I do prefer the interior.

Hi y'all. Current owner of a '22 Tesla M3LR. I've been happy with it, but have wanted something with more ground clearance for Northern California fly fishing trips on poor quality dirt roads. I've added myself to the reservation list for an R2 premium. Maybe I'll have an R2 by mid 2027.

Future R1S owner here. Been on the waitlist for R2, but I both want something that can haul plywood and camp better, and also need something sooner for my back that is protesting my current vehicles. Waiting for new June incentives, then will be ordering I hope shortly!

Hello folks. I have never owned an EV.

Been researching the CT and the Rivian quite a bit, but would love to have some real world feedback on how your trucks have treated you, pros and cons, your pre-ownership expectations versus actual long term ownership experiences.

Currently I drive a Ram TRX and it's a lot of fun, but I did do a CT test drive a year ago and was impressed with many aspects, of course the FSD was neat. I appreciated the much quieter cabin than my TRX. I felt the interior was too plain and didn't feel premium. Also missed having a real driver display and a HUD. I don't do a lot of long road trips, but do have "range anxiety" when I am plunking down over 100k for a vehicle, and despite my TRX terrible mileage, its huge gas tank means I can go farther than a CT if I ever did take it on a road trip.

Have not driven a Rivian yet, but the interior looks much more inviting and classy than CT. But it seems the CT has a more capable FSD than the Rivian, correct? I also drive an AMG E53 which can achieve amazing mileage with its glide mode, so I appreciate well-engineered drivetrains that can achieve both performance and efficiency, but I didn't buy that car for that reason, it was just great looking, comfortable, fast, and had an incredible interior that looked like a 100k vehicle.

My new house has a "dedicated (220/240V, 50 amp) circuit w/ a NEMA 14-50 outlet" mounted in the garage. How fast would that charge a Rivian or similar vehicle?

My R1T is my second EV and I love it. I think your Ram is bigger, but I have never found the bed in my T to be too small. I easily moved three mattresses with the tailgate down earlier this week. Performance is stupid - so fast and it almost drives like a sports car. And I can drive it on the beach. It does so many things well.

Rivian is trying to catch up to Tesla regarding FSD, and they have a long way to go. Right now, it can highway cruise hands free with driver initiated automatic lane changes. It is good, but far from the best. I think Rivian will eventually match FSD, but personally I think it will be at least a year, likely longer.

Using the 14-50 outlet and the EVSE that comes with the truck, you can charge at 40 Amps. The R1's maximum AC charging speed Is 48 Amps so that is pretty close to the fastest you can charge at home. (Unless you install a DC charger, which some people have done.)

For a normal person with normal driving habits, 40 Amps is more than enough. Just make sure your 14-50 outlet is designed for BEV use. It should have a green "BEV" printed on the face. If it does not, you should replace it with one of these:

The R1 Max battery pack is huge, and it will take 16 hours to charge it to 100% from 0% at 40 amps. However, you will rarely do that. When driving around town, you might use 10-20% of your battery per day. I often use much less. Adding 10% to the battery with a 40 Amp charger will take about an hour and a half. Typically, you will charge at night when you are sleeping, so the time it takes is almost meaningless. Charge while you sleep and it will be ready to go for you in the morning.

If you've been researching the CT, then you're aware of the multitude of issues associated with it, the latest being with the Power Conversion System (PCS). Many owners are on their second one and they are now failing, and the wait time seems to be in multiple weeks, if not months, for replacement. This severely limits charging options, if you're able to charge at all. Also, TBH, I'm not sure Tesla is even really interested in this (or any of it's other) vehicles any longer. I believe the CT has the hardware to enable the highest version of FSD at this point.
