Can anyone say with confidence that a jump box will work for a completely dead 12volt battery. I've had the dead battery issue with another EV and Rivian just replaced my 12volt so I'm hoping I'm good for a bit but as a precaution I've been looking at the NOCO Boost X GBX45 and similar items. I've seen the videos with the hookup at the tow hitch but there seems to be some confusion if a jump box will really get you back on the road.

Thanks

Forum search past threads on the subject to get more info. Like this:

Small jump packs like these are meant for ICEs. They focus on peak cold cranking power—high, short, burst of energy. If used with jump leads by the hitch, they do not supply enough steady power to boot up the various computers in the R1. If direct access to 12V battery is available, and that it isn’t too far gone, the NOCO might be able to revive it enough to unlock doors and open charge port.

Owner Guide and Tow Operator Guide has instructions on how to access 12V manually if vehicle becomes unresponsive. They also contain info on what type of jump packs are more effective. These are the kinds listed at https://rivianservicetools.com/. Doesn’t have to be those exact ones, but you can use their spec to know what to look for. These tend to have lead acid batteries, so they need to remain charged or they will go flat and become useless.

Rivian guides: https://rivian.com/support/support-documents

These guides state:
"If you're using a portable jump starter, it must maintain a steady voltage between 13 to 16 V at 30 A."

What is "completely dead?" Most people don't really understand battery states. If you mean it has zero volts (or let's say 1-2v) then no, nearly all jump packs need to see some voltage, unless you mod them. If you mean a battery that has gone low enough to shut down the truck, which seems to be around 10.something volts, then probably yes. I'd say highly likely. Nobody can confirm it will work 100% since it's not 100% on ANY vehicle at all.

I have a jump pack with a minor mod to make it output power with a truly fully dead battery.

Even the 20 amp hour version is larger than the Rivian's own battery (each one in a dual system, or the one in a single battery model). So unless the battery has a full short, yes, that would work, and is overkill/expensive. I haven't heard of the OEM batteries shorting, they simply stop producing enough power.

Mainly just want something to have at home that will supply 12V 30A over the leads next to the trailer hitch. AFAICT the Noco boxes supply enough power to get the doors powered on but if you attempt to plug the car into a level 2 it will immediately die. I just experienced this and want to buy something where I can get my Rivian basic functionality back to either 1) charge the car back up again 2) disable the parking brake (in my recent experience with using a Noco once I had the computer booting up again the park brake release was grayed out in the settings). So in short need something better.

I don't know why that would be the case, given sufficient power and time. You have to keep the battery connected for the full boot time, and have enough power to supply the HV contactor, which isn't HUGE but certainly a load.

"Noco boxes" is vague as they make a wide variety of sizes. They make some monsters that can start industrial equipment.

Agree that it’s vague, but I’m talking about the general consumer ones that people have talked about using in this forum. A little disingenuous in a forum here to pretend not to know and talk about industrial equipment.

I experienced the same sort of thing that Kyle did here (but in my case the 12V gave up the ghost without any warning anywhere including RivianRoamer reporting it was fine):

Just to be clear, Rivian Roamer only reports what Rivian reports. :)

It seems Rivian has not been reporting 12V issues as often as they used to.

Totally! Rivian Roamer is an invaluable tool and helps me to at least visualize the things that Rivian reports. Your work on it is greatly appreciated!

First of all thank you. Secondly, I didn't think you were criticizing. I mostly say things out loud so that others who come along later have context. :)

I'm just talking about the potential spread, and there are many Noco units in the consumer category that are powerful and may do this job. It is simply not true that none of the Noco devices can work, and the ones in the price range of that other battery probably would.

That is simply not true based on my experience. You talking about “potential spread” based on me being vague and then using the word “probably” without any data is amusing. I know from experience that the NOCO GBX155 did not do any more than get my doors open and is in the same price range as the product I was asking about. Anyhow I was hoping to get a person’s opinion who has had to use any of these products in anger. Thanks.
