Good evening everyone....

Maybe this will sound like a ridiculous question, but should the R1T hold up fine being kept outside? I have a Tesla model S and my wife has a Lexus GS 350 F sport. We have always kept them in the garage. We also have an old 2007 Toyota Corolla that is kept in the driveway for our mother in law to use, but the paint has begun to peel pretty bad.

When I get my Rivian, I would keep it in the garage, but it will not fit so I will have to keep it in the driveway.

My neighbors all have trucks and they seem fine. I think they get them detailed annually or every six months, but they don't even keep them under a cover. I plan on getting both a PPF (full front) and ceramic coating, but would hate to have my R1T messed up because it is not in the garage.

As always, thanks in advance for the replies

IT'll be fine, but you might want to put PPF or ceramic over the whole car and not just the front. Tell your PPF company that it's going to be outside and you are concerned about long term UV damage and see what they recommend.

Most people around here in CO don’t have a choice - their trucks have to live in the driveway because they are all so big they won’t fit in the common garage. Other than the hassle of cleaning ice and snow off it in winter and the random hail storms in Spring they all seem to do fine…. You don’t have either of those problems where you live so I wouldn’t hesitate to leave it outside.

Our trucks and Suburbans have always sat out on the driveway. The only vehicle that we keep in the garage is the 1956 Thunderbird. We live three houses back from the ocean in the Florida Panhandle. We keep our trucks washed. They have held up very well, all considered. Our Airstream also sits out in the alley behind the house. We may try to put the R1T in the garage with the T-Bird. Our big trucks are just too long for the garage.

Those same photons that bring life to earth eventually destroy everything so clearly it is a good idea to protect you truck, and anything else you care about, from them if possible but I recognize, as have other posting here, that it isn't always possible, Garages, sunshades, porticos, anything that keeps the sun off will help. Not only does the sun destroy the exterior finish but in combination with greenhouse effect it eventually ruins the interior finish as well.

The other big factor in outdoor storage is cold soaking during winter. This has various negative implications with respect to operaation in cold weather such as regen, charging and range.

No way, Truck gets the garage( even if walls need to come down) time for the model S to get vitamin D.

Can you tint windshield in Cali?

And those windscreen sunshades if you are willing to use it.

There is nothing outside of hail that would hurt or ruin your Rivian by keeping it outside. Unless your city dumps salt by the gallon on your driveway for some reason during the winter you can leave it out there without concern.

Now that said, if you get a lot of rain followed by sunny skies another potential paint hazard that's correctable but could be irritating is water spots. Full PPF + ceramic coating will help, but you may still get water spots on the PPF but fortunately it will be a heck of a lot easier to buff out than it would be directly on your paint where you'll need to go back for paint correction almost undoubtedly.

Lastly.. I assume you'll keep your Rivian plugged in to charge overnight.. but if you live in a climate like mine, your battery could get ultra cold without consistency in scheduled overnight preconditioning. Not going to be the end of the world on normal daily driving, but if you mess up at 0 degrees outside overnight and need to drive 150 miles you're probs gonna be SOL.

OP lives in Southern California. The sun there is harsh and will do the most damage to paint and even interior parts. Dollar store sunshade is the way.

When(if) it rains there it’s best to just stay home, as it is like the first snowfall for those of us in places with seasons. No one knows what to do ?

Hmm.. I'd imagine then yes ppf + ceramic is a must + likely 20% tint all around such as in Texas. I have 30% all around where I'm at and 50% on my windshield purely to protect the interior from the sun.

clear UV blocking tint is the only real option for widnshields, most places rightly do not allow any reduction of visible light transmission below the AS1 line.

a sunshade in the windshield when parked is the most effective tool for Southern California, an$ you can even still see at night.

Mn legal tint is only 50%... but you'll never see that actually installed.
