Leather Friction Sound When Retracting Steering Wheel

Calibration is not the issue. When the steering wheel retracts the leather covering behind it makes a rubbing sound, like rubber rubbing on metal/plastic.

I’ve had this problem. Service fixed it. It’s back. It’ll go back to service.
Our Tesla had the same issue, they replaced… the entire steering column. That fixed it.

Calibration is not the issue. When the steering wheel retracts the leather covering behind it makes a rubbing sound, like rubber rubbing on metal/plastic.

Same for me. Calibration has nothing to do with it since it’s material rubbing, not a mechanical rubbing. It does seem to vary with temperature as well.

This happened to mine. Service center said it was rubbing on trim and they adjusted it. Hasn't done it since

I had this addressed at one of our services and same results. They claimed to have fixed it but it was only temporary as the noise came back. I believe they said they lubed it similar to the repair of the front damper noise under the front bumper.

Noticed the same on my R1S. When mobile service came to fix a fob battery issue, I mentioned it to them and they said it was a foam piece rubbing that was making the noise. Nothing to be alarmed about but others had similar issues. he put some dry lube and that fixed it but he stated it might come back. Since it's more of an inconvenience, i'm going to wait for next service appointment if it comes back.

the sound bugged me a lot. it's the friction from silly thick foam pad on the bottom of the steering column.

i bought some thin foam tape, extended the steering wheel to the max outward and highest, loosened the bottom trim piece and added foam tape to all the friction points between column and foam pad. you can't see the tape unless you down below the wheel and look upward.

total silence.

Had the same issue, brought it into the SC and they lubricated it and corrected the problem

unfortunately, My entire column had to be replaced. The gears were binding and the leather was rubbing
