I am shopping for used Rivians and it seems that a lot of dealers don’t know much about them. Is there a website to use the VIN to find out what options a Rivian came with…something more than the VIN decoder sticky thread?

I was in your boat last month, and the short version is…no. The VIN decoder sites are useless, it couldn’t even tell me which battery pack mine had. The only way to tell is to look in the menus on the truck itself. Or obviously you can spot some options from pictures.

Not sure what you're looking for but there are some visual cues you can use to figure some stuff out at least

Gen 1 (22-24) has a "flat" light bar across the front, Gen 2 (25+) has a thinner light bar.

If you're looking at gen 1:
  • There's no way to tell battery size from the outside but the VAST majority of Gen 1 has the large battery.
  • Silver Brake calipers for dual motor. Yellow for quad
If you're looking at gen 2:
  • Silver brake calipers for dual, yellow for tri, blue for quad
  • Standard battery has no tow hooks on the front
  • Dual large and dual Max has tow hooks
  • Tri and quad only come with max battery
If you are looking at gen 2, it is worth noting that the large battery is WAY smaller than gen 1 large.

The only other option you can tell from the outside is if it has the all terrain package by the wheels. Hopefully this helps!

Thanks for the info, everyone. I have learned to not use info/options provided by the selling dealer but instead use my own research and actual photos. Details from the vehicle's "about" screens answer questions as well. I know the difference between the dual/quad/max/launch based on the VIN. Details from InsideEVs.com provide a good breakdown between motors, battery sizes, wheel sizes, performance option and how they affect estimated ranges. This info can back into determining battery sizes.
