About to take the R1T in for minor service at the San Jose service center. Can anyone comment on the availability of loaners when taking their truck in for service?

If they have one available you might get one but I wouldn’t count on it. They will try to offer Uber credits or possibly an enterprise rental instead.

In my experience that’s something you needed to have worked out ahead of time.

When I took my truck to San Jose about a month ago they were quite literally still working on setting things up around me as I stood in the lobby (hanging lights, etc). As a result, the loaner trucks were still going through initial inspections and weren't yet available, but they did supposedly exist. Their availability will be limited, anyway, so you should probably assume you'll be getting a rental if you haven't been set up with the loaner already. You may even end up with the Polestar I had for a few weeks! ?

My experience at a different service center was that they told me that a rental was set up at Enterprise, but when I went to Enterprise it was not and they did not have a car even for me to rent personally. So a bunch of calls and a day later, I was told I could pick up a car at Enterprise another day later. So moral of story...stay on them and hard...to make sure things are set up for you.

Thanks for the heads up. I called Rivian and they set me up with a Volvo EV through enterprise. The Rivian rep was super friendly and responsive, but definitely glad I called because they didn’t have anything set up beforehand.

Generally there are very few loaners available. Side effect of there only being 15k trucks in existence period. I've tried to get a loaner twice and couldn't either time. Definitely something you need to work out in advance, but best advice is always to plan for not getting a loaner.

FWIW, many ICE dealers aren't offering loaners anymore either. I know my JLR dealer stopped offering loaners a bit before COVID took off and afaik still doesn't offer any in-house loaners. They give you a daily allowance at a rental place (which is usually enough for a minivan but nothing nicer. Pissed me off royally when I had to pay out of pocket to upgrade to a loaner LR to drive around while my LR was in the shop. One of the reasons I won't go back to a normal dealer model again. Rivian has generally been very generous with loaner credits offers for me.)

Yes Rivian has set me up with enterprise and is taking care of an Uber there from the service center. Hopefully it all goes smoothly!

My Acura dealer definitely still offers me a loaner for when my kids 6 year old RDX even goes in.

I got a rental from Enterprise when I dropped off my R1T. The service center guys drove me there because it's only a few blocks away.

But yes, when you book your service appointment let them know if you want them to provide a loaner/rental. They seem happy to do that if your vehicle is going to be in for a few days of service, but they're not going to assume you need it if you don't ask.
