Locking Rivian at 40amps Charging

I've got a home charger that I installed that's connected to a NEMA 14-50 outlet. It's rated at 40amps and when I limit the Rivian to 40amps via the infotainment it works great. The catch however is that everytime I unplug the Rivian, it resets the setting to 48 amps and if I plug it back it, it attempts to pull 48 amps from my charger and causes it to throw a fault error and stop charging.

So my question is either A) Is there a way to set the charge limit to 40amps and it stay persistent, or B) Does my charger suck and I just need to get a better one since I'd imagine it shouldn't even allow the truck to attempt to pull more than what it's rated at.

I don't want to use the mobile charger that came with it as I'd like to keep that permanently in the truck as we'll be charging via RV Plugs semi frequently and I don't want to risk forgetting to grab it.

What charger are you using? Does it not allow to be set to 40 amps? Is the truck actually trying to pull 48 or does it just say max is 48?

It did indeed try pulling 48amps, here's a picture of the charger when it faulted

That seems like a charger issue, it should negotiate the max level with the truck and limit it to 40 amps.

Do you have another brand EV to see if it works with that? Would be nice to know if the communication is breaking down at the charger or with Rivian.

The EVSE should be programmed to send a signal to the truck that the truck may take no more than 40A. Evidently the truck is not receiving this signal as it tries to take 48. The EVSE recognizes this as a fault.

It remains to determine whether the EVSE is sending (erroneously) a 48A signal or if the truck is ignoring it. Try the EVSE that comes with the truck using the 14-50 adapter. The truck should ask for 32A. If it does not then the fault is in the truck. Put in a service ticket. If it does then the fault is with the EVSE. Put in a service call with them.

Just tried this and you're correct, truck immediately updated to only allowing 32 amps on the Rivian Portable charger. So that narrows down it being the charger issue, not truck. Now to buy a new charger.

This EVSE
1)Has a 14-50P plug
2)Is rated 40A

Thus it will not have DIP switches that can be set to allow the CP signal to indicate that 48A is OK. Because it it plug equipped it must not have any means of adjusting the CP signal.

Just tried this and you're correct, truck immediately updated to only allowing 32 amps on the Rivian Portable charger. So that narrows down it being the charger issue, not truck. Now to buy a new charger.
I'd certainly contact the supplier and tell him your story. I think they owe you a replacement unit.
