Okay, bumping this thread because:

1. My sales guy was not correct. I have since gotten clarification that he was misinformed and you simply cannot purchase a used vehicle from Rivian and register it in another state, you must have residence in the state you are picking up the vehicle in.

2. After a few interactions with used dealers, which were obviously not great, I have come back to looking at Demo vehicles, where at least I know I get the warranty started when I pickup, and can purchase and then register in my state of Maine.

But, most of the demo R1S tend to be pretty early VINs. Can I get some more opinions on this please? I have a Gen2 Dual R1T, and I have heard various rumblings about the suspension on Gen1 R1S's, particularly Launch Edition/early VIN's. But, if I can get a similar vehicle with a better warranty, and save upwards of $30k over a new Tri or Dual Max Performance (I know there's a lot of debate over how much quicker the Gen2 are vs Gen1 Quads, but I am not particularly worried about that, this will be a family SUV that will be taken on camping trips and road trips, with some off-roading but not racing anyone in rural maine, lol) - it feels like a good decision overall, but want some more input from those who actually own(ed) a Gen1 R1S, particularly Launch Edition/early VIN.

Thanks!!

I can attest that the gen 1 suspension is definitely less refined than the gen 2 R1S. A lot of rocking and back and forth on humps in the road. It also is a bit smoother over rough / cracked surfaces. I'd say gen 2 R1S suspension is decently comparable to R1T, which has had relatively few complaints

Not a HUGE difference , but definitely noticeable. I cannot speak for the tri-motor, but the dual motor is about the same speed in both generations.

One thing you want to watch out for, and you may already be aware of this. Is the large battery in gen 2 is significantly smaller than the large battery in gen 1. I would go for Max if you're getting a Gen 2

I've had a Gen 1 T and currently a Gen 2 S. I got my Gen1 in 2022 and it was the best vehicle I've ever owned. The suspension was a bit noisy and creaky, but the truck was so good I didn't mind. Now that I have a Gen 2 the Gen 1 feels unacceptable. I had to get the Gen 2 before I felt that though. Gen 1 is a great starting point and an excellent vehicle. If cost is a factor it's worth the small compromises.

What about the Gen 2 would you say makes the Gen 1 feel unacceptable?

So, just to clarify. I already own a Gen2 R1T Dual.

But, I have never driven the S, and it sounds like the difference between the Gen1 and Gen2 suspension was noticeable until later VINs, which tend to be unavailable in used/demo and I am trying to avoid dropping the extra money on a new one since I am already taking the depreciation hit trading in the Model Y. Will I feel like it's a big difference if my Gen2 R1T is my daily driver? That's really what I am trying to assess.

Gen 2 is silent when my 10k VIN Gen 1 had a noisy suspension. The tri overall is incredibly quiet.

Yes, I think you will notice a difference if my experience is anything to go off. If your gen 2 is as quiet as mine is you’ll be disappointed. Although, if your early build has Meridian sound you will get a little bit back as that is the finest sound system I’ve heard in any vehicle I’ve been in.

Random, just FYI Rivian Roamer is not affiliated with Rivian in any way. They are a 3rd party created to help facilitate the sale of Rivians. I would go directly to Rivian if you are looking for answers about buying one.
I would also check your local for sale groups. You dont have to buy used from a dealer. I've seen numerous for sale on Facebook, etc around me. I sold one of my Rivians on FB.

I agree that the meridian is REALLY good (I have that in the loaner Gen 1 I'm driving). But for me the trade off of the much better suspension, noise, and autonomy improvements make Gen 2 worth it.

As far as the gen 2 premium audio - it gets A LOT of unwarranted hate on here IMHO. I think it sounds great. But comparison is the thief of joy. Compared back to back, Meridian is better. But that doesn't mean that gen 2 premium isn't still a solid sound system. I've heard FAR worse.

Yeah, I appreciate that, (and I know that about RR, just a useful resource if Rivian ever actually allows for shopping used across states) I just don’t have the stomach for that kind of used purchase unless I knew the person and/or they were local, but no used R1S’s available in Maine dealer or individual, because it’s so hard to get one here to begin with.

No idea! Boston also told me they won’t ever have demo vehicles because they use all of them for loaners. Which I appreciate, given it’s my nearest SC.
The service center only has loaners, but the back bay Boston showroom must offer demos?

It is close when you turn off sound check in Apple Music settings. @DuoRivian pointed this out in a different thread. Gen 2 is probably 85% of the gen 1 meridian sound now. Which makes it pretty great in and of itself

Unclear, Chelsea just told me they don't, and the closest demo vehicles I have ever seen listed on the site was one in Maryland.

Chelsea is incorrect.
You can go to the Rivian site and schedule a demo.
I think they have a Tri now. I demo'd a dual when the Boston space first opened...

Sorry, I think you may have missed the thread a bit, I mean Demo vehicles for sale. Whether they have vehicles for demo drives, sure, they likely all do (spaces and SC's alike), but Chelsea (and it seems a random assortment of others) have chosen to keep these as loaner vehicles for serviced vehicles, rather than sell any of them. Because you have to pickup the Demo vehicle you purchase, it makes it a bit difficult to get one in the Northeast.

I have a Model X and R1S. Even the Model X is too small for our needs when taking the whole family. Currently only use the Model X as an errand vehicle, when I dont have everyone with me. Both are great for different purposes.

Really suggest getting a Gen 1 over 2 purely based on cost. The Gen 2 is defiantly the better vehicle, but simply doesnt justify the $20-40k more you're going to pay. You can get a slightly used 2024 R1S quad/large for around $70k with low miles vs a tri/max for $110k. Similar performance, range, and features.
