Was the shop in Hyde Park Ma by chance? If so, fight them. They did something similar to me. I called them on it and the price dropped by $10k overnight, it was still absurd, and I will never use them again.
No, shop is on Long Island, I drove 1.5 hours to drop my car.

It’s already happened to me. Just got my premium notice from State Farm. $2700 a year for the R1T. When I took delivery in Sept of 22 it was half that.
Mine from SF is nowhere near that $2700/year... but it has gone up 20% in one year, with no claims...

Astonished!
Just received an estimate to repair the drivers side rear quarter panel, tailgate shell and rear bumper. Luckily the damage was caused by a neighbor who bumped my R1S during the holidays.
Estimated Repair Cost: $49,880.
The shop is the 1st authorized Rivian Repair Facility in the Northeast. They’re a quality outfit!

I’m flabbergasted! I hope I don’t get into an actual accident!

This was from me backing up. Initial estimate at Rivian Authorized in Hartford CT was $8K and would not do PDR (paintless dent removal) took to PDR specialist in Danbury CT and orig est was $4.5 but ended up being $2.6 once he got inside. Good Luck!

Here is repairing almost the same damage on the other side using PDR.

Thanks! I’m in Westport so I may check that out. This feels like a racket that will ultimately cost us a fortune.

After reading this entire thread, I am fortunate to have all my cameras operating on my R1T. In the past 7 years I have been involved in 3 vehicle accidents that were 100 per the fault of the other driver. My vehicles were never totaled but did receive significant damage that required days in a body shop. I was supplied with comparable rentals the entire time. My secret was that I had videos of all 3 collisions. The insurance companies, all 3, said to have them repaired and here's authorization for an Enterprise rental truck.. I never drive without my cameras recording and now that I have the R1T, the Gear Guard going while parked. Cameras are great insurance...

Great video. I would definitely go this route if in a similar situation.

I had a very similar accident to my R1T in Sept, person hit/dented that rear quarter panel, scratched the bumper a bit (they replaced it) as well as trim around tire and parts along the top side of the bed. They also rec'd a new quarter panel section and replaced the section from the tunel door to tailgate. All the paint, blending from roof of cab to tail gate. Just looked it up, it was $8k at European Motor Works in Costa Mesa CA. Cant say enough good things about that place, doesnt help you being on the East Coast but $40K + seems seriously excessive.

Part of the issue is EV related. Someone hit my son in a parking lot. Looks minimal and if I had done the damage would have left un-repaired. The original estimate was about $5k, final bill to their insurance was $8k. Took over 6 weeks! The shop had to have a tech come down from Detroit to disconnect the high-voltage before work could begin. Also, waited to drop off until all the parts were on site. Sold the car a couple weeks ago with 80k+ miles for $13k.

My kid hit a tree (long story, not as stupid as it sounds) and slightly crumpled the rear left door and fender. Original estimate was 20k. Was seriously questioning if I wanted to own a car that is sooo much more expensive to repair than other vehicles. Repair shop explained that it’s more that the vehicle and company are so new more than it’s because it’s an EV. That makes sense to me on some level but also… wow, buyer beware. In the end it was 13k.

I do think that part of the problem is that in the insurance/collision repair ecosystem there is very little incentive to keep repair costs low. If you go pay a shop yourself and they don’t do much insurance work, you’ll get a sense of what a repair really costs. In California Rivian cannot make you go to a particular shop. But they can make it really difficult not to.

I just spoke to the body shop and they confirmed that the insurance company approved the entire claim, which included 26 full days of labor! I’m truly at a loss for words.
