Cool indeed. Colorado is the same. The second sentence says they pay sales tax and title on the NEW car if and when you buy it.
The things you learn on the interwebs... First time with a car anywhere near this value. Never paid much attention to the finer details before.. As when you buy a sub $10k vehicle, it really doesnt cross your mind.

Same here. Most expensive vehicle by 2-3x. Hope you're loving it as much as I'm loving mine!

I was... Until I turned into a nervous nelly with all these small dings turning into nightmares.

I mean, I think I would be good if it did happen. Insurance has my R1S valued at $107k, and I only paid $75.5k. But insurance companies will always find a way to screw you too!

Now that you own a high end car, and pay a high end premium, if anything ever happens and they are giving you the run around-- then act like a high end customer. It's the little guys they usually try to take advantage of. They like the customers who pay larger premiums.

I've had a car totaled from being stolen, and my wife had a car totaled by t boning someone who ran a red in front of her. Both times they payouts were painless and honestly offered more than if I were to sell those cars private party before they were stolen/wrecked.

But it's worth checking one thing-- since your car is worth more than what you paid-- it's possible the payout might be limited to your original purchase amount (including taxes and title). I was in a similar situation and had to elect for an additional coverage option that covered up to $25k over the purchase price. I think it added around $15/mo, but my memory is a bit foggy now.

I dont think so... They asked me pointedly, after seeing the loan paperwork for USSFCU, what the value of the car was on todays market. I told them $97.5 per the Rivian Configurator. She then told me that with new vehicles, and the current market, the system always adds about 10% to that figure. So $107k it was.

Astonished!
Just received an estimate to repair the drivers side rear quarter panel, tailgate shell and rear bumper. Luckily the damage was caused by a neighbor who bumped my R1S during the holidays.
Estimated Repair Cost: $49,880.
The shop is the 1st authorized Rivian Repair Facility in the Northeast. They’re a quality outfit!

I’m flabbergasted! I hope I don’t get into an actual accident!

That quote is ridiculous......but so is calling that "minor damage".....
Either way, this stuff is going to cause a big problem as Insurance companies refuse to insure particular vehicles or raise rates by multiples for coverage...

that's rough. I do auto body and unless new lights are needed or hard to get parts all that damage looks repairable and should not cost that much otherwise. That ridiculous.

In most cases, the value is determined by what it costs to replace your vehicle with a like-for-like vehicle. That means if your 2023 Rivian is declared a total loss, the insurance company will give you money to replace your vehicle with another vehicle just like yours--same year, same model, same options, same condition (before the accident), same miles. They'll run a report finding these vehicles, make small adjustments for small differences like options and such, and then average the "selling cost" of those vehicles, add sales tax and boom--there's your check. In theory, the idea is that you don't lose anything. You should be able to take that check and purchase a used vehicle that was exactly like yours without spending an extra dime. That's the theory anyway. So what you paid when you purchased the vehicle really has no significance at all as far as the insurance companies are concerned.

BTW, this exact experience happened to me when I was rear-ended while stopped at a light. I was hit so hard that my Jeep was totaled. At the time, it was two years old and only had about 12K miles on it. My check would have definitely covered a 2-year old Jeep to replace it, but opted to put that towards an otherwise identical new one instead. So I still ended up paying about $9,000 out of pocket, but I ended up with a new vehicle.

Was the shop in Hyde Park Ma by chance? If so, fight them. They did something similar to me. I called them on it and the price dropped by $10k overnight, it was still absurd, and I will never use them again.

After reading the many threads on this post I did some further research, I spoke with the shop as well as the Rivian supervisor who handles Rivian repair shops.

As stated by many on the thread the entire drivers side of the vehicle needs to be replaced and since I had a full ppf wrap and ceramic, that gets done as well.

The drivers rear quarter has the compressor for the air suspension and is a structural part of the frame, since the tailgate was also impacted that needs to be replaced as well. It turns out the labor rates are set between Rivian and the shop so it’s supposedly not excessive.

All in all it seems that they are following proper procedure and protocol.

I reached out to the insurance company and mentioned that between the repair, diminished value and loss of use the cost of the claim could approach 70-80% of the total value of the truck.

I would have accepted the check and a repair at my local shop, however if the damage impacts the structural integrity of the truck then I’m not for that.

I am more concerned about the future cost of auto insurance for these types of vehicles and while I do like the SUV, frankly I enjoyed wanting it (waited 3 years)more then having it.

My range is less then I expected by over 30% and it’s a huge truck (tough to gauge when parking), my previous main ride was/is a Porsche Cayenne diesel, that gets over 600 miles per fill up. The front passenger door froze shut and wouldn’t open during a cold spell this winter and I had to climb out of the drivers side of the truck. Don’t get me wrong, I’m generally happy and Rivian service has been great, but I’m not sure I would buy it again if I had the choice.

I’ll keep this post current as the repair unfolds.

I agree… I might end up going to my local guy and have him fix the qtr panel, replace the light and I’ll live with a few Jerry rigged parts.

I am really worried about the future of insurance rates. If Rivian can't make patch panels, quarter panels, etc. available, these cars will be unaffordable due to insurance rates that exceed payment rates.

Seriously. People complaining about high insurance rates should be directing some of that complaint to Rivian, instead. A $50,000 repair for something minor is equal to roughly 20 years of insurance premiums for a Rivian. Of course, insurance carriers are going to raise Rivan's premiums every period. One more accident for OP in his Rivian and I would drop him if I was the insurance company.
