This is very unnerving...on a side note, I would purchase some Mega Million tickets if I were you...I imagine the odds of the Rivian failure on two vehicles at the same location are close to winning the big one...
Not a bad idea. I keep telling myself that I'm just getting *really* unlucky, that this isn't the normal Rivian experience. My wife may not trust the Rivian enough for us to drive it anywhere if this continues, though.

Ugh, I just experienced this today in my May 2023 build quad large. I was at highway speed, 20 mins into my commute to work, when I received the red message indicating motor fault, which changed pretty quickly to 'system fault detected' and it limited my speed to 67 km/h (42mph). I was able to pull off safely and put it in Park, then called Rivian. I noticed the codes had cleared as soon as I put it in Park, and put it in gear with no messages showing. They had me reset anyway and stayed on the phone with me for a few minutes while I drove it. Said that when this happens, if it doesn't show up again, they don't pursue it, but have a record and the logs.

Rather than drive to work (another 45 mins away) and possibly get stranded, especially with the pack fairly low (I was planning to use an L2 near work), I turned around and headed for home. No issues trying various speeds, going slow, going fast, using Conserve mode. Plugged in for the day and drove it another 30 mins this evening. I work from home tomorrow and Friday, so I will at least get a few days to see how it is working before I have to commute back to work.

I'm hoping this doesn't turn into anything, as we are supposed to leave on a trip to Utah/Arizona for 4 weeks in mid-March! My nearest SC is several hours away, so it would be hugely inconvenient... but I think Calgary is still new enough (i.e. not that many vehicles to service) that it might be a relatively quick turnaround compared to some in the US.

Wish me luck!

Update on my truck:

I had the same issue shortly after getting in the truck and putting it in gear last Thursday (Feb 6). A reset cleared it again, and I called Roadside assistance again. They started looking into diagnostics in the background and reached out to my "local" service centre in Calgary. It has been fine since then (several hundred km).

Today I received a call stating they had reviewed the logs etc and would like me to bring it in, likely to replace the REAR drive unit. So this is interesting, as @GoBlueR1T had it happen to the FRONT drive unit as I recall (both 2023 G1 quad). They are sorting out how many days it might take etc and are planning to call me back, but I tentatively have an appointment for next Thursday, Feb 20th. I'm optimistic it can be resolved in a few days, and am thinking of just getting a hotel in Calgary for a few days rather than driving the extra 17 hours to do the 2nd round-trip.

I guess I'm lucky that if this was going to happen, it was far enough away from our trip in mid-March that it should hopefully be resolved by then! Suffice to say my wife is pretty unhappy, so I'm going to have to eat the costs on our end in my 'play money' budget. I did consider a Ford Lightning since I at least have a local dealer (my friend's just spent 4 weeks getting the parking pawl assembly replaced; it failed closed and his truck wouldn't move at all!), or waiting for the GM, but I really liked the R1T better for many different reasons. I hope this doesn't bite me in the butt in the long run. If they open a Service Centre in Kelowna or Spokane this won't be so bad (like Tesla has done).

Hate to be pessimistic, but I would plan on it being longer than a few days. My truck is still at the service center; it will have been there at least 4 weeks by the time they finish. It's possible that you might be faster than me, since they also had to repair damage caused by the tow truck, and I asked them to do the comprehensive exam. BUT I suspect they won't order the drive unit until they can look at your truck, and it takes at least a few days for them to install it once they have the part. Sorry....

Latest update.
Rivian service center here called to say that my rear inverter has moisture in it and will need to be replaced. They have ordered and received the part and plan to do the work in a couple of days along with a 12 volt battery replacement. So far, the problem has not reocured. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for updating, I was wondering what the outcome had been on your truck. So have you been driving it since mid January?

Well I was just reviewing the quote and it actually says replace the FRONT unit, not REAR. Hmm. RE: timing, I've been given the impression that they are going to replace the unit, and that they hope to get me out after the 2nd day, but I might need to stick around for a 3rd. Nowhere did they talk about waiting for parts to show up... I guess I'll find out!

Good luck! Hope it's a quick turnaround! I haven't been too frustrated with my lengthy repair since I've had a Rivian loaner, but obviously your situation is different.

Update to the update.
Dropped of the truck this morning at my local service center. They told me this issue has shown up all over the country and a revised version of the rear inverter will be installed. They also had a list of a dozen other items to be addressed. They estimated 3 or 4 days.

That's interesting. what trim and VIN do you have?

I've never had motor or inverter issues, just curious.

Let me guess... 12V replacement, front knuckle to hub bolts and mobile charger seals.
they’ve listed the knuckle bolts and 12v to mine, though my quote says front inverter not rear. Wondering what is going on there…

strange that this is happening to vehicles that are about two years old. I've never had this issue on my 2023 Quad.....

I'm dealing with this right now too. Yesterday, driving home from work on the highway received this error and pulled to the side of the highway. As I was on the phone with Rivian roadside assistance, I noticed the error had cleared after being in park. Decided to try to drive home. Made it another 5 minutes, and then it happened again. Pulled over again and did a restart as requested by Rivian roadside assistance. The error cleared again, and I was able to drive the remaining 10 minutes home. Rivian roadside assistance also had me do a sleep cycle when I got home.

Drove around a bit last night with no issues. This morning I drove to work (on the highway) with no issues. Thought I was in the clear.

Frustratingly, driving home tonight, at almost the exact same spot in the drive as yesterday, the error happened again. Was a but scarier this time since I also had my kids with me. Did a reset and it cleared the error, but Rivian wants to service the truck now. They are picking up the truck on Thursday. (I said that I did not feel safe driving it to the service center 1 hr away)

It's very cold here (between 0 and 10 F today). I asked roadside assistance if this was at least partially due to the cold. They said no, but I'm skeptical.

I love the truck, but this (and a few other service things) is very frustrating. I'm thankful that Rivian seems to be handling this one well so far. They set me up with a rental car near my house and are picking up the truck.

Hopefully they can identify the problem and easily fix it!

I had almost convinced my wife to get an R1S, but things like this keep her wanting a reliable ICE.
Another update: I'm told that after replacing my front drive unit, they discovered "additional concerns" and are replacing both front outer tie rod ends (I'm not a car person and don't really know what that means...). This is in addition to them replacing my (big) battery and tailgate latch last year. Feels like eventually my truck is going to be completely made of replacement parts.
