Multiple Rivian Owner and Free NACS Adapter - My Experience

Just posting my experience RE: the NACS adapter being a multi-Rivian owner. I personally bought an R1T new in 9/2022; an R1S new in 7/2023, and a second R1S used in 12/2023.

I've heard different things, but the following is what I was just told.

- used R1S does NOT qualify for a free adapter (but the adapters will be available I the Gear Shop per the customer service rep). This is the first I've heard of that and I think I've read second owners of some early Launch Edition R1T's have already received adapters.

Website says the following BTW and makes no distinction between new or used:

- adapters will be shipped out by delivery date and multiple owners would not be getting their adapters at once. I know there are multiple Rivian owners on this forum who have been told the exact opposite and who are receiving multiple adapters.

- In my personal experience, I received the mass opt-in email on 4/4/2024, then received another opt-in email on 7/2/2024.

- My first NACS adapter is about to be shipped - presumably for my 9/2022 R1T delivery.

Just posting my experience for reference. I know customer support does not have the best information and are wildly inconsistent. I know folks are going to have very different experiences with this.

Seems like Rivian's policies and internal communications remain a bit wonky and inconsistent.

I bought my 2022 R1t used in February and just received my adapter.

Exactly. That was my understanding and that's how the website reads.

I honestly got the feeling the CSR with whom I spoke was just making things up, although it is possible policy has since changed. Who knows?

Not a huge deal to be honest. I don't use the SC's that much even when I owned Tesla's. I mostly charge at home. Additionally, just in case @COdogman forgot, one my R1S's is on the Big Island of Hawaii where there are no Tesla Superchargers and no imminent installation plans of which I am aware (I could be wrong about that), so I actually don't need a 3rd one, although based on what other non-original owners have been reporting, I was expecting one.

My first free adapter is scheduled to arrive tomorrow in Phoenix, just in time for my return to Hawaii.

We have both of adapters in-hand already. 3/22 R1T and a used 2023 R1S which had 22 miles and was already registered.

That's great! I was actually specifically thinking about one of your posts regarding the adapter to highlight the inconsistent information and procedures from Rivian. I remember reading in the original opt-in thread another multiple Rivian owner was told the 4/2024 opt-in would be sufficient for all Rivians owned and that multiple adapters would be sent with no-need to opt-in again. Wonderful it happened for you, but not happening for me.

Plenty of non-original owners have also obviously received adapters, but I was recently told non-original owners don't get adapters. Again, not a huge deal for me personally, but the inconsistency is a little frustrating and confusing - as is the non-original owner non-qualifying claim. I do wonder if there has been a policy change, but I sure hope not. I imagine there's a reasonable chance reaching out again to customer service will yield a different response.

I am having a bad experience with this issue. I recently purchased a 2023 R1S thinking I would be able to charge it at a Tesla Supercharger which is very close to my home which I pass by everyday once the ownership was transferred. Well it took 2 weeks for the transfer to happen and I was told in not so kind words by Rivian that I was NOTan original owner and would not be getting an adaptor sent to me and they had no idea when they would be available for purchase but maybe next year due to supply chain issues and when I said why does it matter that I am not the original owner she got upset and hung up on me.I don’t think the original owner got one but Rivian has decided that second owners are second class?

I hope that's not the case (owners other than the original will not get adapters, I mean). I am a second owner and received my adapter a few weeks ago.

I just purchased a used 2023 R1S Quad and was told by several customer support people that I would not receive a free adapter.

That is current policy. You can buy it from Gear Shop. Or buy the Lectron, since GM and Ford are doing it—while not explicitly "approved", it's closer than "not approved". A2Z says they are close to being certified with their Typhoon Pro. I assume that to mean UL2252 certification. Tesla's adapter, as is, is not UL certified.

Giving every single person a free adapter is just not financially sustainable. If you ran the business, you'd arrive at same conclusion.

I wouldn’t expect second owners to get an adaptor. For new owners makes sense. You have two coming so should be OK.

I got an adapter for my 2022 T and since traded it in for a 2025 S. The guide said keep the adapter instead of leaving it with my T. I assume the new owner of the T will get one and I may end up with two.

Did you create this thread just to remind us that you have 3 Rivians??

I got my quad in June of 23. Since then there are about 10 in my area. My 11 year old daughter no longer says Rivian when she sees one.
