Does it matter? If the car is stopped in front of you facing straight, sideways, or upside down, do you want your vehicle to move forward or stay at a stand still? Continue standing still? Guess the correct action will be taken in that case.
I don’t want it to do anything. My point which I can’t seem to get across is that if it can’t get the simple stuff right what is it going to do in more complicated situations when using this sort of data to perform more actions in the future. As I said. Just a funny observation. Been driving for 40 years now. I don’t even use driver+. Nothing wrong with it BTW. I just prefer to drive myself.

I would like a switch to be able to turn off the dancing cars display. If they displayed cars to the side and behind me, I might like it. It is actually distracting, as well as useless.

Could not agree more. I can see in front of me. It’s not helpful.

If this is how my R1S interprets this situation I’m am super thankful there is no real auto drive! WTH. Gotta do better than this.
A car in front of me, one beside him and finally a car next to me. Everyone evenly in their own lane. This should be a no brainer. Still can’t figure out why they even have this view in the middle. Not very confidence inspiring

One thing I have noticed is that the display does not render the same thing that the car uses for critical obstacle avoidance. My adaptive cruise control still follows the vehicle in front of me with confidence while the cars might be dancing around me.

The other day, I had a semi-truck rendered diagonally and the virtual trailer had virtually crashed into my virtual R1T at highway speeds. The car knows that the semi & trailer was safely staying in its lane, and there was no collision warning, and my Driver+ remained engaged.

So, my interpretation of what's happening is that the sensor suite & actual driver assistance features are extremely capable and perform competitively for a free offering. It's just that the solution that they use to display this information into a format that we humans can visualize has its wires crossed.

My hope is your last paragraph is correct. I own one. I don’t want it to be bad! :)

I remember my wife’s Tesla doing the same thing when we first got it 2 years ago. After many updates through those years it’s much better. I’m sure it will be the same with the Rivian, just got to get the right UX/UI people.

I was to Eugene OR a few days ago and it was very foggy and all cars were going slowly on the highway. I could only see the car in front of me an barely see the tail lights of the car in front of that. However, the Rivian could "see" the car in front of me an two more in the distance. So, while it sometimes shows weird car angles, it's eye sight in the fog was better than mine. It was actually nice to know that there were more cars than I could see.

I used driver plus a ton on a very long trip, on open roads for long stretches it is a good highway driver assist. Made for some pretty relaxed long stretches.

It is the same way I use autopilot on my Tesla. I never use either of them unless I have a lot of open road. They both work very similar, they tend to leave large gaps and then overreact when a car jumps into the gap. Just not a great experience.

Only change I would like to see Rivian make is allow the current functionality to work on any highway it can read the lines. Then they could save the hands free portion for the mapped roads.
I have Tesla model X and R1T, and Tesla has much superior system than Rivian‘s Driver +.
Tesla system can anticipate /detect much sooner if the next car is trying to squeeze in front of me. It does lane changes, and recognizes objects much more accurately. Rivian has a long way to go to catch up.

I'm fairly sure that the discrepancy in what's displayed versus what the vehicle is reacting to is because Rivian is also using the front radar system for these situations. It's likely the reason they were able to hand back adaptive cruise to us when the windshield has terrible glare on it- they still have enough data to do adaptive cruise safely in these situations. The vision system is far from perfect, though it has definitely gotten better since I originally got my R1T.
