New 22-inch Staggered Wheel Availability?

The new quad has a 22-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rubber in 275- and 305-mm widths front and rear package. How do we get these wheels? It seems as a quad-motor owner we should be able to get these, but I don't see them available online now.

Since I have 21s today and will be saddled with a ridiculous 1-tire only (expensive and poorly-wearing) option forever now that the other company that was going to make 21" tires cancelled when Rivian discontinued the 21s, I guess I'm in the market for new wheels.

I would not anticipate this setup being necessarily backwards compatible with the first generation R1 vehicles.

I'm not saying it's not possible.
But we don't know it is. Overall the vehicle dynamics will be impacted if not originally accounted for in the development phase of the vehicle.

We may see a difference in rear quarter panels too. Similar to how many models deal with the performance versions.

Have owned staggered sets before. Wouldn’t again. Especially with a EV as heavy as the R1. If asymmetrical and directional tread, you cannot rotate tires at all to extend service life. And even if you could (symmetrical), only from side to side. If you think tire consumption is high now, think again.

No kidding. I have a staggered vehicle now and zero rotation. Brutal tire wear...but that is a toy that sees a few thousand miles a year at most. Can't imagine doing that with a 7k# Rivian...at least in my use case.

Which then brings up my next question....

How much of a performance hit will the new G2 QM take if one opts for the 20" AT set up I would want?

Interesting thoughts. I suppose that I could buy the existing 22" sport brights and put the Michelin PS5s that are coming out with the quad and were used on the Pike's Peak challenge for the fronts when they come available, right?

Those tires are OEM for the foreseeable future…I wanted the same, but it looks like they might never release these to the public! They might release an updated version of the PS4 for us though

That would be really weird. Discount Tire is a Rivian partner and I would expect that Discount Tire could sell these tires. Are you suggesting that you'd have to go to a physical service center to replace these tires? I don't know why Michelin would release an old tire for this size, although I'm no expert.

Rivian's relationship with DT has nothing to do with it. Everything to do with the tire manufacturer and what they decide to make available for retailers or OEMs. Since nothing's been announced, it's all speculation either way. If and when available, yes, you can order the appropriate size to put on your existing 22s. Personally, it doesn't make sense to put summer performance tire on a vehicle this heavy for daily use. And I have a hard time picturing how anyone could find existing performance lacking enough to consider a tire that is potentially softer and faster wearing.

Surely that just means they are only making sizes that fit vehicles that come with them stock, rather than making 100 different sizes in an attempt to have something that fits every vehicle on the market.

It can not mean that only the OEM can purchase.

Do you really think that if your car comes with these tires and you get a flat the only option will be to buy a new car? No, replacements will be available.

And once replacements are available for people whose vehicle came with these, anyone whose vehicle fits them will be able to buy them.

I am waiting for PS S5 in 275/50/22 to be available for G1.

While certain sizes are currently available, not for Rivian. May have to buy through Rivian SC, if one desires.

Of course, Rivian SC may simply say they are only for G2 QM and not compatible (laugh) with G1....

Yeah. There's no reason you shouldn't be a bee to do the G1s on OE 22 at least!

True, however as mentioned above, they could sell them only to manufacturers and not to third parties like Tire Rack. If that happens, Rivian could lock them to Gen 2 vehicles only.

The Michelin Defenders are now available in 21" so you don't have to keep using Pirellis. Search through the forums there are multiple threads including:

Apples to oranges. The Pilot Sport OP is inquiring about is a performance sport/handling tire. The Defenders are in a completely different category.
