I’ve really enjoyed my 2 test drives and can’t wait to place my order. But, after watching all the reviews and my own experience, I know what I want to see in the next version of the R2 hardware. Here’s my list so far:
  • cargo tie-downs (can’t have cargo bouncing around on trails or pets unprotected)
  • tailgate sensor/camera to prevent opening into obstacles like roof-top canoes or normal garages (better than software-defined opening height IMO)
  • grab handles to help passengers bouncing around over trails
  • HVAC vents in the boot
  • V2H wall charger
  • Rear door emergency releases similar to the front doors
  • Electrochromatic roof
  • Anything that allows for tailgate picnics (e.g. tailgate, standing rear window ledge from the R2 reveal, etc.) as stock or dealer accessory
  • Center console 120v plug (accessible to all passengers)
What would you like to see?

The only misses to me are cargo tie downs and grab handles. HVAC in the cargo area makes sense for dog owners, and no one else, so I get the omission.

Cargo vents could also help condition the cabin more quickly. A mode where preconditioning turns on the cargo air vents but then turns them off during driving (unless configured differently, eg for a dog), would be neat.

They've said all Gen2 vehicles have the hardware required for V2H, so we're just waiting for them to finish/release the gateway. V2L is also coming s00n but has actually been demo'd so is hopefully right around the corner.

The rear doors do have an emergency release in the same spot as the front doors' physical latch, but it is a cable pull hidden under a plastic cover. Is there a reason to duplicate the front door mechanism (which I suspect is more complex/expensive) when these latches should really never be used?

I agree with all of these. The tie downs, tailgate accessories, and center console 120V outlet would be my top picks. An electrochroamatic roof and liftgate sensors would be great add-on options if they're concerned about price.

I'd love to see a tri-motor R2X w/air suspension, virtual "locking rear diff", full-size spare option, and built-in air compressor in the rear cargo area. Not holding my breath.

The ability to turn off regeneration braking.

I felt a little motion sickness on my test drive. I tried reducing the pedal to 15% to allow it to coast but familiarity will take time.

I'm a commercial truck driver and use engine compression, it has three settings plus the ability to turn it off. I like having the ability to coast.

If it had grab handles, a sensor to prevent the hatch from hitting the garage, and an FM radio - I'd consider it as close as it can get to a perfect vehicle.
Oh, and a shade for the sunroof.

I'll take care of the grab handle and the shade, but I can't install a hatch sensor or FM radio.... so I guess those're my biggest desires.

List looks good to me. But i would add:
- data ready usb-c port
to enable playing from a music library on a usb stick.
- a regular fm radio (as another commenter suggested)

Realistic Items:
  • Grab handles
  • Tailgate height adjustability
  • Tie downs
  • Powered frunk
In my dreams and will never happen:
  • Split tailgate. I use the one in my Element all the time. Drop glass is nice but doesn't create near as big of a top opening as a split gate.
  • ~12" shorter. I don't need as long of a vehicle.
  • Make the default trim slightly lower (8" ground clearance?) with an "off-road package" that has a lift.
  • BMW ix3 style HUD
TBH I'd probably be a great candidate for an R3 size-wise, but that's too far away :(

I'm amazed this isn't a NTHSA requirement already.

It's such low hanging fruit that nobody can complain about. The number of people who don't turn their lights on in rain is ridiculous.
