After noticing that I was in a very small minority of people not getting the 2023.38.0 update I knew something was up. I know full well that you cannot force fetch an update. And I also am aware that updates get released in batches over days or sometimes weeks. But I found out what my problem was and I fixed it. This post is for those of you who are weeks or months behind and still waiting for updates.

It occured to me that the RIVIAN is obviously trying to use my Wifi connection to download the update. I checked Wifi and it said "Connected". So I disconnected from wifi by turning off the toggle switch and then turned it back on. I happened to have the update screen in the background and I noticed that for a fraction of a second the 2023.38.0 update flashed on the screen and then disappeared !!!

I knew I was up to something. Annnd, the truck started having issues connecting to the same wifi again. It would try and try but then timeout. Very strange. So I did a hard reset on the truck, and that didn't help. But it was obvious that for whatever reason the truck has started to dislike my main wifi in the house. So rather than fight it, I deleted all the wifi saved connections and I had it connect to the guest wifi, which is basically the same network with different ssid. Nothing happened immediately, but I figured if it's now downloading the update, it would likely be a couple of hours before it works. And guess what, about 90 minutes later, my update was available to install.

What I would recommend to anyone stuck in an old update for more than 3 weeks :
  • Delete your Wifi connections from the truck and re-add them
  • Try a different wifi altogether
  • Give it a few hours to download again
  • Maybe go ahead and perform a full reset first just in case

Here are a few points that might be relevant:
  • I use a set of Google Mesh devices in the house. I have 6 of them and no other device has had any issues. They're the 1st gen devices not the new "nest" ones.
  • My ISP is COX (1000 Mbps down, 100 Mbps up)
  • I have very strong wifi signal in the garage where the truck is parked as that is where a wired access point is located

i too use google mesh routers, have not had that issue and never had trouble getting updates. probably just a fluke which you and others may be experiencing.

im sure you've all had to restart your computers our routers for various connection issues and this is probably no different.

Thank you for sharing this experience and writing detailed notes. I had a similar case of my truck not wanting to download the .38 update. I didn't end up trying your method, but I too suspect the initial stumble was wifi related.

I ended up asking Support to push the update. They said they would contact the OTA team, and to expect the update within about an hour. Indeed - about an hour later, the update appeared.

Interesting. We use EERO here. My trucks were really slow to get the update. The S got it first about 5 days after release. My T didn't get the update until the 23rd. Service will not push the update to the truck unless it has failed previously. Updates have been hit or miss for us...sometimes they appear the day they are released...other times its many days after before we get prompted.

I really think Rivian should have a fast ring for those of us who want the updates on day one and default all trucks to the slow ring. That way folks who want it first can get it first by opting in.

What would be great is if it could show you the fact that it's downloading the software rather than download it in the background and only present it when it's ready. As it stands, there is no way to tell if the truck is having local network issues.

Sorry for what might be a dumb question, but after over a year of ownership and 23k miles, I've never connected my truck to my home WiFi. The truck gets good data connection everywhere I've gone, it's free for the time being, and always got the OTA updates. So, is there a need to connect to WiFi?

Not in your situation, it seems. If you don't have good AT&T coverage at your house, it's pretty essential.
