the only thing we know for sure that they likely will do post shutdown is the improvement in internal network architecture. that's supposed to reduce cost but i'm guessing it'll likely improve efficiency and/or vampire drain. not sure of anything they might do but id guess there are some other hardware/software changes they're going to make as they ramp up to R2 production and want to cross-share as many things as possible
I hope it’s not the new steering wheel or the 2 gloveboxes.

They've also confirmed they're going to change something about the battery packs. But it's possible that's already been done as they've started-ish to deliver Standard+ battery packs.

The updated pack design, could be just minor improvements, or it could be a redesign of the cooling, or it could be 800V switched for charging, or it could be better cooling and a heat pump or {insert your hopes and dreams here}. We haven't heard any good rumors about any battery pack updates.

I feel like of the things we've seen on the R2/R3, I think the steering wheel is the most likely visible feature to get ported to the R1 as soon as possible. I say that because it seems like it'd have the least impact of other parts if the size and airbag is the same. Handling how the buttons work would be pretty easy to handle via SW config. But, we have no way of knowing how for along they are on their production of the new steering wheels. They had clearly put a lot of time into the development and calibration of the control wheels, but that doesn't mean that they've started production yet to include them in the R1 in April/May.

The other thing that I think might happen is the autonomous driving features could be upgraded. We've seen camo'd R1's with cameras on the side mirrors, just like the R2/R3. It's possible they're trying to commonize the vehicle electronics ahead of R2. That could include vehicle network (very likely), infotainment and driver display computers (seems likely to me), ADAS (possible), heat pump (doesn't seem as related), 400/800V (???), ...

The R2 is also going to use the 4695 batteries. That's all but confirmed not coming to the R1. So, it's possible that even if the R2 had 800V, that the R1 wouldn't get that. In fact, maybe the R2 tri-motor is so fast because it is running 800V.

I will also say that Rivian is generally pretty good about under promising and over delivering. (Better than most.) See the R3 and R3X as examples. The sell off of demo vehicles seems like the R1 refresh could be enough different that they want a different set of vehicles ready as examples.

I reserved a Demo launch edition last Friday and cancelled it today.

Sexy changes may not be in the offing for 6-9 months but I suspect the April refresh will definitely improve computing power, cameras, charging pad, repairability (quote from RJ), and will possibly bring subtle body changes like the new light bar and headlamps. The Tock problem if it still exists will be fixed.

I say the sexy changes may take longer because they may not have started manufacturing until after the R2 reveal. But there’s no way there’s not an R1X coming of the S and T varieties. I also suspect the homemade motors will be released in 2024 with a Quad version with more punch.

With all that in mind I decided to wait until the future is clearer. If the above happens, the resale market will have more R1s at a discount as the loaded among us trade up.

That’s what’s making it tough for me. Do you lose your deposit by cancelling?

Did you have a 2022 on hold? How far did you get in process?

Whatever the wife says to do
I have not seen any posts on this yet, I am 18% into installing the update. Anyone else had it drop yet? Only came out for my S, nothing yet on the R1T

Will let you all know how it goes.

Updated with software update details from riviantrackr:

Software Update 2024.07.02
Tesla Supercharger Access Coming Soon
Coming soon! Be on the lookout for the opening of the Tesla Supercharger network to Rivian vehicles.

Navigation Improvements To Ease Your Travels
We’ve improved navigation performance and usability on the center display:

  • Improved route selection and estimated time of arrival (ETA).
  • Faster rerouting guidance when the vehicle diverges from the current route.
  • Different route line colors to clearly indicate the legs of a route.
  • Enhanced map styles to better convey higher map titles and different map orientations.
  • Improved stability and map rendering performance.
  • Updated the maximum number of added stops to 10 during trip planning.
Room Entry And Exit Enhancements
We’ve improved the roomy entry and exit experience:

  • The automatic movement of the seat and steering wheel is now more consistent after you enter an unlocked vehicle that was asleep.
  • The seat and steering wheel now continue to automatically adjust when you use the steering wheel controls to change the volume, answer a phone call, or open a garage door.
  • You can quickly stop the automatic movement of the seat and steering wheel by pressing the leftmost thumb control button on the left side of the steering wheel (or any side seat control).
  • The seat and steering now automatically adjust when you unfasten the driver seat belt or open the driver-side door after you press the Park button, but before the vehicle shifts into Park.
Vehicle Launch In The Province Of Quebec
Rivian is now launching vehicles in the province of Quebec in Canada.

NOTES
  • Alexa is not supported in the province of Quebec.
  • Alexa is only available in English.
Additional Improvements
  • For the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), the vehicle now shows the last known tire pressure readings on the Gauge View in the Drive Modes app.
NOTE
After the vehicle updates its software, it still takes a few minutes of driving before the tire pressure readings are available.
  • For defrost or defog, increased airflow at the proper temperature to quickly clear the windshield while keeping the cabin climate comfortable during cold weather conditions.
  • With the Rivian mobile app version 2.7.0 or later, the trip planner now accounts for towing, allowing you to select one of the Trailer Profiles defined in-vehicle.
  • Estimated charging costs now appear on the center and driver displays when you start charging using the Rivian mobile app or Plug & Charge.
  • Improved the accuracy of the estimated remaining time for an active Climate Schedule.
  • You can now save minor seat position adjustments to your drive profile.
  • To prevent inadvertent changes from the key fob or Rivian mobile app:
    • The windows won’t go up or down while the vehicle is in Drive, Reverse, or Car Wash mode.
    • The vehicle won’t lock or unlock while it is in Drive or Reverse.
  • Improved the smoothness of reengaging Highway Assist after a lane change.
  • Fixed a rare issue in which the navigation notification on the center display incorrectly showed the battery as critically low.
  • Fixed an intermittent issue in which the overhead lights didn’t turn on if you opened a door while the vehicle was asleep.
  • Infotainment:
    • Fixed an issue that prevented the Library tab from initially loading media in Spotify.
    • Fixed a rare issue that caused Spotify to load a previous user’s playlists.
    • Fixed a rare issue in which the icons on the driver display incorrectly switched between day and night modes.
    • Fixed a rare issue that caused an emergency phone call using the Phone app to fail.
  • Made stability improvements to the backup camera view.
  • Improved the 12 V battery notification and recovery if the charge on the battery is very low.
