I think this brings up a great question: Other than a wrapped CT (which I must admit, makes it look a hell of a lot better), has anyone seen a CT in the wild that looks clean?

When I wash my truck, it looks clean for at least two weeks. Like, really clean. Every CT I have seen looks so dirty.

The only way to improve the way the CT looks is to close your eyes.

Besides the stickers, I think this one looks a heck of a lot better in color vs. the stainless.

I'm not advocating the styling, I think they look worse in person than in pictures. And its hideous and frankly too big for me. But, this looks better IMHO.

Maybe all the CT owners live on dirt roads.

And yet my stainless steel sink, constantly exposed to water, soap and food, has no rust at all. Riddle me that.
You only eat brillo pads and dish soap? ?‍♂

In the future dystopian Mars-like hellscape that the Cybertruck was designed for everything has a burnt metal/orangish/rusted hue. So it will fit in perfectly.

I will note that in the Terminator documentaries the old-fashioned T800 didn't seem to have a rust problem and seemed to have gotten exposed to all matter of bullets and badness.

Not sure if joking…

But there are many many types of stainless steel and more ways to treat it on top of that.

Yeah the Cybertruck wrapped in color looks pretty sick...maybe better than a Rivian...just kidding Cybertrucks still look like cars from a 2000s racing car game with a $20 budget

The Cybertruck forum is truly like a soap opera. People think we are rough here. Over there is like a dystopian future
Seems they are interested in the correct truck then.

I read some owners claiming it's just railyard dust that is oxidizing.
Still...
That is pretty common. With painted cars you can us an iron remover and disolve it, but not sure what that might do to stainless.

Correct. There are hundreds, if not thousands of variations of stainless steel. Stainless that is engineered to "never rust" (actually, "corrosion resistant" is the proper term) will in fact never rust, like your sink. But that comes with other tradeoffs, such as strength, workability, cost, etc.

Tesla touts it's own special grade of stainless. That's more Elon bragging than breakthrough. Corrosion resistance in stainless is complex, there are multiple "modes" of corrosion. I am quite familiar with this because our company purchases/installs millions of $$ of stainless tubing and process equipment every year. We have to spec the proper grade of stainless for the application. Compounds containing chlorine are escpecially hard on stainless steel.

There's no practical way to fix it on existing builds. In process equipment, we passivate the stainless by bathing it in nitric acid (nasty stuff) which essentially dissolves any exposed iron molecules and also forms a chromium oxide barrier. I doubt anyone is going to dip their CT in nitric acid!

It's most likely one of the first four below.

I'm not a fan of the CT, but the photos I've seen are of external contaminants (fallout or rail dust).

I'd trade-off bullet resistance for rustproofing, but that's just me (and my reservation number hasn't been called yet).
