Greetings forum members,

I have found the feedback on these forums to be excellent including the thoughts shared around the software updates. I typically wait a couple weeks after receiving the push updates to see feedback on bugs on the forums before updating.

I have been waiting a long time now on 19.04 due to all the bug reports for the most recent updates. For those that have updated do you recommend that I continue to stay on 19.04 until a more stable update is released or should I update to 27.01?

Thanks for the help

Rich

If everything important to you is already working, then there's no urgency to update. Having said that, 35.* is out now and actively finding its way to vehicles which is two updates newer than 27.* and has additional bug fixes.

I figure there will always be some bugs, so unless they are serious or extremely widespread I usually wait a couple days after an update is available then go for it.

I have an early build R1S (vin 1663), I had no issues with .27 or .31.

Worth noting this is just to give you my results on those 2 builds. I usually take the update as soon as it is available to me so my opinion to apply it or not is probably not of any real value to you.

I do find it interesting you still have the option for .27 though. I was always under the impression the new versions replaced the old ones.

In the same position as you. 2023 vehicle and stayed on 19.04. After reading all the complaints about the last 2 updates, I stayed on the one that seems to have everything working fine. I don't use Apple Music or Audible, so it wasn't huge to me. If .35 seems to fix a bunch of the bugs, I'll probably update.

Why do you have a car that does OTA if you are afraid to update the software? It’s such a Luddite way of thinking. For the most part, software is 2 steps forward, maaaybe half a step back process. On the whole you will be better off than yesterday. Don’t tell me you don’t update your smartphone because you are afraid of bugs only to discover that a security hole you stayed on led to you getting hacked.

No way I would get more than 1 update behind. Would be a pain when you actually update and might have more chances of something going wrong.
Agreed. Too many revisions behind and you can potentially run into updating issues. Not a good practice, but to each their own.

How about 0 steps forward, 1 step backwards off the cliff?

There was an update less than a year ago that Rivian totally pooched the Security Certiicate which rendered vehicles hung during update, leaving them unstable and/or unusable, and the only way to fix it was to get Rivian support involved to manually push a reset AND in some cases, a physical service visit by Rivian. That's not better off than yesterday.

From your profile it appears you don't have a Rivian or any vehicle that lives or dies by OTA, nuff said. But you know all there is to know about OTA, right?

I'd say with Rivian if you're waiting for a 100% bug free experience you'll never update. They're constantly releasing new features and with those new features there are always going to be bugs.

I know this is going to come across somewhat confrontational, but know it's not my intention to berate. If you're looking for a bug free experience a company like Toyota/Lexus is your best bet. They are consistently behind the curve when it comes to new developments and tech. This is because they test EVERYTHING to death before releasing, just to ensure they have it right.

Rivian, on the other hand is on the cutting edge with constant new features. I've owned 3 vehicles at this point that live with OTAs. With Rivian I've been through .27 .31 and .35
All of them have been just fine for me. Bug free? Absolutely not! But they've been just fine. You have to remember on places like this forum, people come here to discuss (or sometimes whine or rage about) problems. For every person on here saying "this update is utter garbage, why would Rivian release trash" there are probably 100 more who are living life just fine not caring (or even knowing) about some bugs. With a vehicle on the cutting edge like Rivian, there WILL be bugs.

That update was pulled on the first batch. Waiting until others update isn't a bad idea, but this version has been out for a week now with no bricking issues. Plus it is a good point to mention being more than one update behind is a bad practice.

Except for the update Zoid mentioned that bricked a bunch of people's cars last year, I was happy not to be in the first batch on that release. To Rivian's credit, they identified the problem early in the process and pushed a fix 24 hours later for those affected.

Keep in mind that there have been some updates that make the vehicles objectively worse, such as the recent one that resets auto suspension. These are often undocumented changes that Rivian would prefer you not know about.

As Tesla has been doing OTAs longer than anyone, they have a lot more examples of this. With OTAs they have reduced regen in the cold, slowed charging speeds on certain vehicles, made the autopilot system nag more frequently, disabled the use of the radar system, increased autopilot following distance, and raised all suspension settings. These are just examples on the top of my head, but it shows that staying behind on updates isn't always a bad thing. OTA updates giveth, but they also taketh away. If you've been burned by an OTA update before, you're more likely to distrust installing future updates as being the obvious choice.

Agree. I wait at least a few days to a week before updating at this point. Over the years I’ve had way too many updates on various types of devices that caused issues, including a ā€œminorā€ update on a factory automation system thot took down the production line for a shift. I’m happy letting others be the guinea pig.
